If you like convoluted factoids and things that don’t make sense you will love Sidney Powell’s latest leap down the rabbit hole. January 6, if you follow her reasoning, was a smokescreen of sorts so that Justice Samuel Alito would have time to work on Louie Gohmert’s batshit lawsuit — remember that? Gohmert’s suit claimed that only Mike Pence could decide which electoral votes counted, which was considered a novel spin on the 12th Amendment — or a novel spin on something.

In any event, Powell seems to be saying that the insurrection was supposed to stop everything cold in its tracks and that would allow a SCOTUS decision not to certify Joe Biden as president but Nancy Pelosi stonewalled the effort by reconvening Congress and finishing the certification anyway.

If you’re thoroughly confused by now, be advised that listening to Powell is only likely to confuse you more. Here’s 4:42 of hogwash.

Pelosi wasn’t trying to one up anybody, she was just showing that Congress would not be intimidated and it’s widely agreed that that was a better message to send rather than delaying certification.

The problem with all of this is that it does no good for democracy to do a continuous post mortem on the 2020 election. There are some sane Republicans who have advocated that the party worry about its future and move forward. That’s the way of reason. But those voices of reason are drowned out by the conspiracy theorists and Donald Trump, who for rea$on$ of their own, fat green negotiable rea$on$, millions of them, need to kip the fantasy alive.
