Somebody run quick and check the thermostat down in Hell. It must have frozen over. I’m finding myself liking Mitt Romney. At least I really like a comment that he just made. And in all fairness, Romney is showing a lot more guts than 99% of his Republican compatriots who are all in for Velveeta Voldemort. I’m actually sorry he’s leaving the Senate because who knows what MAGAfied lunatic will take his place. But I can’t say as how I blame him. Trump and his MAGA kkklan have destroyed the Grand Old Party and they’ve done it with the help of the Grand Old Party. Trump didn’t do it alone. That is the tragedy in this situation. Raw Story:

Many Republican politicians and pundits alike have seized on that one clause in Hur’s 345-page report to lambast Biden, but the GOP’s own 2012 presidential nominee tells Raw Story it was a low and petty political jab.

“I thought the report from the prosecutor was politically charged. Unnecessarily,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) told Raw Story on the steps of the Capitol as he was headed to the Senate floor to cast a rare Friday evening vote.

When it comes to mental hiccups, Romney can relate.

At 76, Romney may be a year younger than the GOP’s presumptive 2024 nominee, former President Donald Trump, 77, but, like Trump and Biden, according to Merriam-Webster, he’s a senior citizen.

While Romney can relate to their mental lapses, he can’t understand what he sees as a double, anti-Biden standard.

“We do that sometimes. As you get older you say the wrong word,” Romney said. “As when Donald Trump said several times, ‘Nikki Haley’ instead of ‘Nancy Pelosi.’ That’s no big deal, but Biden does something, it becomes a headline.”

Per his new usual, Romney — who’s retiring at the end of his Senate term — remains an outlier in today’s Republican Party, though other senatorial seniors can relate, especially the Senate’s only nonagenarian who refused to judge America’s current octogenarian president.

“Somebody that’s 90-years-old should not comment on somebody that’s 80-years-old,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) — who turns 91 this fall — told Raw Story.

“No comment on his age?” Raw Story inquired. “Doesn’t it strike you as personally offensive?”

“I think that I should reserve judgment on that, because I haven’t had a conversation with him for three years,” Grassley — who served next to Biden for decades in the Senate — said.

Biden may have been thrown under the proverbial bus by the special prosecutor, but he’s getting lots of support from his former Democratic Senate colleagues, especially septuagenarians from his home state of Delaware.

“One of the reasons why I think Donald Trump’s not crazy about debating is because his mental faculties would probably make Joe Biden — and the rest of us — look like a genius,” 77-year-old Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) told Raw Story. “I think that’s part of the reason why he won’t debate. Maybe someday they’ll have a chance to debate and we’ll get to judge for ourselves.”

It is necessary for Trump and Biden to debate. I don’t know if that’s something that Trump can refuse to do but I guess we’re going to find out. The debate I’m looking forward to, however, is between Kamala and whomever Trump anoints as his VP. That ought to be great to hear Vice President Harris take down whatever election denier shows up on the ticket. If it’s Tim Scott, I think it would be especially hilarious, Oreo that Scott is. But who knows? It will probably be Elise Stefanik, although don’t count Scott out. He’s supposedly the miracle worker that will deliver up the Black vote to Trump. On that I await.

Romney also commented on the double standard between Biden and Trump. “I thought it’s interesting that it gets a lot more play,” Romney told Raw Story of the attention Biden’s mental slips get compared to Trump’s gaffes.

It’s a verity that Trump can ramble incoherently for minutes on any given day and it goes unnoticed and unreported or underreported but if Biden does it, OMG, it’s a federal case, four alarm fire, national disaster level event.

It’s good that there is still some sense of decency pervading politics. Joe Biden did the decent thing and comforted Mitch McConnell the last time he had a public zone out moment and now Mitt Romney is doing the decent thing and acknowledging how Biden has to add a double standard to his list of burdens.

And I do love him saying that Trump make other men his age look like geniuses. That is stellar. Better double your security force, Mitt, Donald is going to hit the rooftops when he hears about this.

  1. Can’t see the double standard there Mittens? Really? It isn’t as if there hasn’t been this double standard, the anti-democrat/anti-progressive double-standard for at least a few decades. The msm has just turned up the volume a bit-you know, to 11.

    • Correction–should be can’t see WHY there’s a double standard. And here I’m not even in my 70’s yet. I sure am the pot calling the kettle black.

This isn’t the least bit difficult to understand. It’s that good old right-wing noise machine that the “liberal media” BLINDLY follows. That “liberal media” that Fox “News” was established to “balance” hasn’t been “liberal” since the day after Fox “News” first went on the air. Fox “News” and the rest of the right-wing noise machine (aka “propaganda mills”) make up some blatant falsehood, put it out there through their dozens/hundreds of outlets (TV and radio), and the “liberal media” then “reports” on the “article/announcement” without doing due diligence so that the rest of America has it put in front of them–and, since it came from a “trusted” news source, there must be *SOME* thing there. Until a small crack appears in the original narrative that some intrepid REAL journalist looks at and does the old-fashioned actual legwork to turn that small crack into a hole the size of the Moon and ruins the original narrative–but only some months after that original narrative had been played out and replaced by some OTHER new “story” put out by the right-wing noise machine. So, the “liberal media” remains a constant six months behind the latest right-wing “scandale du jour.”
And the same thing exists with Trump. The right-wing noise machine hides (or seriously minimizes) even the slightest hint that there might be something wrong when it comes to a Trump “misspeak” or “misstep,” waving off the entire thing as just “the liberal media’s constant Trump Derangement Syndrome” (ironically, the folks criticizing TDS were the folks who started up the entire “Clinton Derangement Syndrome” narrative–against both Bill and Hillary–and that “liberal media” fell right into lockstep by falling for every anti-Bill and anti-Hillary story that could come up, though in Bill’s case, the far right overreached with the impeachment deal which kept most anti-Clinton Democrats fall in behind Bill to support him against the obvious hatchet job).

  3. Yes, there needs to be, at least, one presidential debate. That being said, if/when one is scheduled between Biden and Trump and Trump decides to “skip” it, Biden should show for the debate (time and place) and hold a town hall.

I do wish I’d invested in ketchup and popcorn companies last year….
