Not surprisingly, after last night’s congressional hearing we’re seeing more and more details surface about who said and did what before the January 6 insurrection. Here’s senatorial candidate Herschel Walker letting you know where he stands.

Whatever it takes, huh? Nothing ominous about that.

And here’s another jewel.

Herschel Walker never read 270 pages in his entire life, much less at one time. But his comment and who he chooses to side with here reveals a great deal, both about who he is and where we are as a nation.

The Big Lie is many things and chief amongst them it is a grifting tool. Donald Trump raised millions of dollars in donations off the Big Lie. So did many of his cohorts.

The Big Lie is evil on a lot of levels. At its worse, it is a corrosive influence on democracy, because it erodes faith in free and fair elections. Going down a few notches, the Big Lie lines the pockets of the worst liars in our society, enabling them to do worse things. Finally, right-wing media is living off the Big Lie and it is a pernicious influence on a sane society, in and of itself. That’s been the case for decades now.

Jenna Ellis is an example of one of the worst liars, lining her pockets. She has managed to take the Big Lie and fail upward with it. She’s now a “political commentator.” She started out adjudicating traffic tickets in Weld County, Colorado, which is Ken Buck (“Kill Em All, Let God Sort It Out”) territory and then she held herself out as a constitutional scholar on Fox News. That brought her to the attention of Rudy Giuliani and you know the rest. She also taught “legal studies” at Colorado Christian University, whatever that might be. Point being, her actual knowledge and experience is pretty thin, but she figured out a way to grift with it in these changing times in which we live.

And God only knows that the same can be said for Herschel Walker. The man is a joke, another celebrity carpetbagger looking to be a star in politics. His education and experience makes Jenna Ellis look like Sandra Day O’Connor, but he’s running for the United States Senate.

These people are appalling. They illustrate a profound moral decay in our culture. They live to lie, manipulate and grift.

I guess when your moral compass is smashed, or you never had one to begin with, that money is the only thing that matters. If you make it dishonestly, so what? Or, for some people, I think the attitude is “all the better.” There’s no question in my mind but that the Steve Bannons, Alex Joneses and Roger Stones laugh at how well they’ve done financially by manipulating people. What’s the expression? “There are only two kinds of people in the world, wolves and sheep. Which do you want to be?”

We live in the Age Of The Sociopath. That was the takeaway when Donald Trump came down the escalator in 2015. It may not have been completely evident then, but that was the message. And here we are. Here we are.

I’ve said it before, that a pickle never goes back to being a cucumber and I seriously wonder how much more screwed up America can get before we simply become a country that is unrecognizable and not worth living in? That is the question that captivates me, because I certainly didn’t grow up in this version of America and I don’t like what I see happening to us, this reign of kakistocracy, the worst of the worst taking charge.
