Maxine Waters’ office in Los Angeles was evacuated Tuesday after a suspicious package was received addressed to “Anne Thrax.” Time Magazine:
Parts of the office building were evacuated and the L.A. Police Department and a hazardous materials (HazMat) crew removed the package, which was determined to not be dangerous, according to a notice from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
LAPD spokesperson Mike Lopez said the department would also open an investigation into the incident, according to the Los Angeles Times. There were no reported injuries.
“There was no evidence of any dangerous substance at all,” Lopez said. “They’re probably going to investigate to see where this item came from.”
The crazies are out in full force this week. Somebody threw a brick through Mark Warner’s office window in Roanoke, VA on Monday. Politico:
“Thankfully, due to the hour, no one was there and no one was hurt. We’re all extremely grateful for the quick, professional response of the Roanoke Police Department,” Warner said in the tweet. Warner’s office referred further comment to police.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident, according to Roanoke City Police spokeswoman Caitlyn Cline. Police charged James W. Trainor with felony property damage on Monday. A man matching Trainor’s description was seen carrying bricks in the area around 7:30 a.m., and Trainor was arrested later in the day in relation to another call, Cline said.
“We think this is kind of a random, isolated incident. Not to say the act is random — we do believe Trainor meant to do this,” Cline said. “But we don’t think it’s a precursor to anything bigger at this point.”
What Waters and Warner have in common, besides their initials, is the fact that they are very outspoken Democrats, critical of Donald Trump. Maybe these incidents are the actions of isolated, random malcontents, but they are disturbing nevertheless. The political atmosphere in the era of Trump has gone from bipartisan to tribal and toxic.
