There are days in this business when you truly wonder if the computer isn’t haunted, or if perhaps somebody slipped LSD into your drive-thru taco. The things that you see just can’t be real, right? Wrong. If the year is 2024 and the topic is politics, any bloody thing that you can conceive of can be real. There are no limits on how bizarre. With that said, take a look at what just showed up on TwitX.

So what prompted this? Maybe it’s finally sinking in with Gaetz that McCarthy, for all his faults, was not as bad as things could get. Mike Johnson is as bad as things could get. The only worse people in that position would be Marjorie Taylor Greene or Lauren Boebert.

Now I’ll tell you what occurs to me and this is the obvious shot to take: The RNC needs leadership and McCarthy is a good fundraiser, so let him head the RNC. And since he knows how to toady to Trump, Trump will probably be all for it.

And don’t be surprised if it comes down that way. McCarthy was talking about a political future in the fundraising area and this could be it.

And also, don’t be surprised if McCarthy comes back as House Speaker. All bets are off. The GOP is dead, Mitch McConnell, the last vestige of party leadership basically abdicated the scepter to Donald Trump last night when he decided to bend to the “political mood” of the country.

Mike Johnson is clearly in over his head. He’s so far in over his head that I almost feel sorry for him. If he wasn’t such a pompous ass talking about how he was elevated to the Speaker post by none other than God himself, I would feel sorry for him.

Let’s see what happens. It seriously would not surprise me to see McCarthy back at the podium although at this point? I’m not sure it matters. The GOP is a rudderless ghost ship. The only other ship in the Republican sea is the Trumptanic, and it’s a dumpster fire of a pirate ship. Anything goes, truly. anything goes.

  1. McCarthy is spineless but he’s not stupid. On the surface Bratty Matty’s idea makes sense due to the fundraising thing. I’m sure the RCCP is looking at the coffers and knows they are at a financial disadvantage when it comes to the looming general election campaign. I’ve no doubt things nosedived with McCarthy’s ouster. Despite the Kock political arm (American’s For Prosperity) making noises about putting money directly into Congressional and state races I’m not so sure that will happen with GOPers on the Hill. The House was probably already lost even before McCarthy got tossed. It for damned sure is almost certain to go down and go down hard come November and with recent developments with the Senate’s capitulation to Trump it might too.

Business, big business wants stability. Predictability. Even if they don’t like, hell HATE the prosepct of higher taxes and more regulation well, that’s what they pay lobbyists for – to mitigate that stuff. Trump, and because GOPers on the Hill are afraid to stand up to him offer nothing but chaos so if I had to bet most of AFP money will go towards statehouses. And planting seeds for 2026 and 2028.

That would have been true to a certain extent with McCarthy as Speaker. And let’s face it, he was never going to last two years anyway. Not with the crazies of the Free-Dumb caucus (which includes Gaetz) on his ass.

The thing is, McCarthy would probably do better fundraising as RNC chair but I’m not at all sure it would be anywhere near the level most expect. For the same reasons I’ve already spelled out. Yes, he’d persuade some decent sized corporate donations but not at all like what would be expected, and especially with Trump in their stomping around. Trump’s already sucked up the small donor stuff and the folks who write the big checks would be loathe to hand over big money to the RNC if it’s going to immediately be seized by Trump!

McCarthy knows this. He also knows whether it’s the RNC or DNC it’s a thankless job most of the time. He took enough shit during his tenure as Speaker that he’s probably not interesting in putting himself into a job where he’ll have to deal with it nationwide! He can probably make more as a lobbyist, or at some think tank. Lay low for a year or two and be able to objectively assess the lay of the land to decide if he wants something high profile again. Plus, he’s got a score to settle with Gaetz. He WANTS to see the ethics committee finally drop the hammer on Bratty Matty. I’m sure he’d rather be in a position to enjoy that rather than be dealing with the shit he’d be dealing with as RNC chair.

I could be wrong but I think he’ll find a way to weasel out of taking the job if offered.

    • Maybe Matty is trying to make up. I’m going with the theory someone put acid in my taco. I’ve done a wide range of hallucinogens years ago and some caused some weird realities. I’m gonna wait and see if this nightmare of a thousand evil clowns clears up. If not, I’ll go with Hunter S Thompson’s advice: when the going gets weird…the weird turn pro.

    • Absolutely right. Ursula wrote, “Trump will probably be all for it.”

I cannot believe Gaetz would have done this if Trump hadn’t actually ordered him to. That would also explain the head-spinning reversal.

So the question now becomes, why does Trump want McCarthy back? First of all, this is not just Gaetz going into reverse. It’s Trump first and foremost. Don’t forget, Trump himself was responsible for McCarthy’s ouster, because he refused to support him when he was being attacked. And after the ouster, when Trump told him all the reasons he did not, McCarthy replied: “F-ck U .”

Trump doesn’t really give a rat’s ass about the GOP And I don’t think he has any understanding of how congress works. So what’s in it for him exactly? The funding? Trump would only care about that if he thought it would benefit him. Maybe the idea would be that any incumbent getting funding has to campaign for Trump more than for himself. There’s a logic to that, as that would be the best way for the incumbent to be reelected anyway. And that way, Trump would in a way be able to fund his campaign at a time when a lot of donors are shy of donating to him and when his own finances are going down the tubes.

      • Wait, on second thought there’s something more basic behind this. It’s simply Trump’s revenge on Mike Johnson for losing the big vote. It was meant to screw the Democrats but the Republicans fell into their own trap. Trump will never admit he made a mistake in getting rid of McCarthy in the first place, but he’s always ready to exact revenge on a loser, and what better way than to replace Meek Johnson with McCarthy, the very guy Johnson replaced? It’s not really going to help Trump much, but now that he’s circling the drain and angry 24/7 he will do anything to exercise his total power over the GOP, because it’s the only power he has left. Makes him feel a little better, that’s all. A truly freakish situation.
