This is getting scary. The 2020 election will forever be remembered in history as when one presidential candidate was too much of a child to admit the glaringly obvious, which is that he had lost and by a substantial margin. Some 23 months later, we are still hearing about the purported “stolen election.”
Now it is fall of 2022 and yet another election is getting ready to go down in the history books. As expected, the rumor mill is up and running full blast, with Republicans and right-wing media hedging their bets.
Their bottom line is a simple one: if any Democrat wins, it’s because the person was part of a grand scheme of cheating. Marsha Blackburn is blaming Big Tech for the theft of the election today, particularly Google, who she informs us, is out to get none other than Marco Rubio.

And it gets worse. Media Matters is reporting that Newsmax host Dan Ball has come right out and spoken openly about the next steal of an election being underway.
“If you don’t win this by a landslide,” Ball recently told Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, “they cheated in Arizona. I’m just going to put it out there.” Both Ball and Lake are election deniers, and OAN has heavily promoted Lake’s candidacy for governor of Arizona.
Ball’s comment shows where denialism about the 2020 election takes us: Any election won by a Democratic candidate is fraudulent. Within the alternate universe constructed by right-wing media, Republicans would naturally win races all over the country if not for Democrats stealing elections.
At the end of a recent interview with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Ball said that “looking at these polls, listening to the pundits — even on the left — everybody sees the red wave is coming. And it’s too late for Democrats.” Clasping his hands as if he was begging, Ball added that “I just hope there’s no funny business.”
“We got to run clean elections,” Gaetz replied. “That’s certainly essential. … And we’ll have our eyes peeled for any funny business there.”
Ball’s latest suggestions that the midterms will be stolen follow nearly two years of OAN misinformation about the 2020 election, a necessary foundation for the rest of the network’s false claims about elections. In addition to its own coverage of a massive variety of 2020 fraud claims, OAN has also devoted mammoth amounts of airtime to individual stars in right-wing media’s election fraud universe.
Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy. Yet right-wing media and desperate Republicans have no problem whatsoever taking a wrecking ball to that foundation.
This is where we are two weeks before the election. If the election is a big blow out for the Democrats, as Michael Moore predicts, then I can only imagine that the next order of the day will be right-wing media inciting another January 6.
And what about Republicans who win? If Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene hang on, will that be because the election thievery wasn’t as sure footed in those districts or some other reason?
This is no way to run a democracy. Election denying — or election lying, let’s call it by its true name — is the cancer that could destroy this republic. One thing is certain: we can’t keep second guessing every single election. When the dust settles a few weeks from, eliminating the election fraud conspiracy theory has to become the order of the day.
