Mark Meadows Backs Off His Power Play Of Impeachment Of Rosenstein, Says Contempt Charges Will Do

Mark Meadows is the very image of the stereotypical good old boy politician, whose office is basically a sinecure due to gerrymandering keeping the “good” votes in and the “bad” votes out. Today he dialed back his plans to eliminate Rod Rosenstein as an enemy of both Donald Trump and his ultra-conservative henchmen corps in the House. The Hill:

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) says he is tabling his efforts to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein after having several meetings with Republican leadership, stating that he would instead pursue contempt if the Justice Department (DOJ) does not turn over documents Congress is seeking.

While the impeachment option remains on the table, Meadows told reporters Tuesday he now hopes it will be a contempt process rather than impeachment. […]

“I think it is our desire to have more of a contempt process, which obviously has to have a partner with the Speaker and I think hopefully they will at least acknowledge we’ve made some reasonable concessions to give DOJ and FBI,” Meadows told a scrum of reporters.

The Speaker doesn’t want to have anything to do with impeachment and he said this before the idea was watered down to contempt charges. Paul Ryan says impeachment is a bad idea “for a number of reasons” chief among them that impeachment shouldn’t be used in a “cavalier” manner and that Rosenstein’s actions “do not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors, which is a very high bar.” Ryan has a gift for laughable understatement. Rosenstein is not going to turn over evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation and to think otherwise is sheer idiocy. But still, Meadows persists in this delusion.

“I hope we can avoid impeachment and hopefully avoid contempt and get the documents, but certainly both those things are on the table and remain on the table to have more of a contempt process,” he added. “Both options remain there.”

Meadows says his efforts will “unite” Republican leadership and once that’s done then the plan is to put the gavel in the hands of House pervert in chief Jim Jordan, who sent a “Dear Colleague” letter announcing his plans to run for Speaker of the House. Terrific.
