Be the change you want to see. I will say about Liz Cheney that if she ever cast a single vote I agreed with, that occasion escaped me. And I was less than thrilled with the fact that she voted for Trump twice. Once I get, twice is beyond the pale. But to her credit at least January 6 had the effect that it should have had on every Republican, but she’s one of the few to speak out about it. Here’s what that looks like. Trump would have killed to have crowds like this in Iowa, where he won the primary, but with a fragmented vote.

Des Moines Register:

Cheney said the country’s politics are undergoing a “tectonic shift,” citing instances of members of the Republican party supporting Trump’s claims of the election having been stolen as key evidence.

“Certainly, what’s happening in the Republican party is dangerous,” Cheney said. “We now have one of our two major political parties that has abandoned the Constitution.”

Cheney, who advocates for the defeat of Trump in the polls in November, said she hopes one of the outcomes of the political shift will be a reevaluation of how Americans engage with politics.

“We all have a responsibility to encourage our public officials to engage in substantive debate (and) to be respectful,” Cheney said. “I hope we will walk back from … the edge of the abyss that we’re looking into that has become so divisive and partisan — and so toxic — in so many ways.”

And of course Cheney was commenting on social media today about how Trump is calling his mob on Loren Merchan, daughter to Juan Merchan, the judge that is hearing the hush money case starting April 15.

For the third time in recent days, Trump targeted Loren Merchan in a Truth Social post voicing fury over her supposed connections with Democrats and bolstering his demands that the trial be scrapped.

The posts skirt close to a gag order that forbids Trump from talking publicly about witnesses and court staff — but doesn’t include Judge Juan Merchan or his family.

But Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman who was one of the ex-president’s harshest critics from the Republican side of the House and was eventually ousted by her party in Wyoming, said he was intentionally encouraging violence against the woman.

“Trump is repeatedly and maliciously attacking a judge’s daughter on social media,” Cheney wrote on X. “He knows this will bring threats of violence against her and the judge. Trump is depraved and unstable. This unconscionable behavior shows yet again why he is unfit for any office.”

And this is the part that is going to send the ketchup bottles sailing into the hallowed walls of Mar-a-Lago. Cheney predicts Trump can’t win with as little Republican support as he actually got in the primaries.

“In a number of these primaries, what we saw was that in some instances, close to 30% of the Republicans said they won’t vote for Donald Trump,” Cheney said. “So although he won, that is not a basis on which someone should go into a general election feeling any comfort about being able to prevail in the general.” […]

“We know (Trump) tried once not to leave office, and he will have no incentive to guarantee a peaceful transfer of power and to leave office should he be elected again,” Cheney said. “As frustrated as I know people get sometimes with policy disagreements you might have — and I certainly have policy disagreements with the Biden administration — I know the nation can survive bad policy. We can’t survive a president who is willing to torch the Constitution.”

She is right about this. A country can survive bad policy, even a corrupt president, as it did both Richard Nixon and Donald Trump. But it cannot survive a candidate who has made it abundantly clear that he had no intention of abiding by the Constitution and agreeing to the peaceful transfer of power. And that is who Trump is. He’s made that completely clear on more than one occasion.

The GOP needs to dump Trump and go into a post-Trump world. It’s clear that Cheney intends to be part of that world. Who else will be alongside her is not known at this time.

  1. A very large crowd respectfully listening to a politician who uses reason rather than vitriol to make a point to voters! Good on her for trying to save democracy. Once that is accomplished she is sure to lead any responsible opposition party that rises from the ashes of MAGA. And, Dems will have a powerful nemesis! I don’t like her policy positions, but I admire her savvy in playing the long game!!

  2. Looks like a much larger crowd than dingle berry has been getting for quite a while now.

Should the mango moron’s vile and violent t.s. posts incite anyone to harm Judge Merchan’s daughter, if DoJ does not IMMEDIATELY arrest his ass, it is truly time to take the mother -f*cker out to save our own lives-and it will be self-defense. If we cannot depend upon DoJ to protect us/our nation, we’ll have to do it ourselves. And I am not going out on a limb when I say we pretty much can expect garland to sit on his ass and do absolutely nothing after all, he hasn’t done anything about the moron’s latest threats against President Biden, approving the kidnapping of President Biden. The idiot’s ass should have been scooped up the moment that crap got posted. Now, since threatening a sitting President is Ok by the DoJ, we can start threatening trump who is NOT president.

    • No, but Trump IS both a “former President” (who is still entitled to Secret Service protection) and an active candidate for President; on that particular issue, it’s a little less important since Trump already is entitled to protection but even if that weren’t the case, the Homeland Security Secretary could order protection since Trump qualifies under several criteria points–the “120 days” rule is merely a guideline for definite protection. (It was after CANDIDATE Robert Kennedy was killed in June of 1968–still seeking the Democratic nomination–that Congress authorized protection for “major candidates and their families”; it didn’t specify the candidate had to be a party’s definite nominee.)
So, if YOU want to threaten Trump, just be advised that you WILL need to prepare for a visit by the Secret Service. We all know that Trump doesn’t listen to anyone’s advice and that Trump has no sort of self-censoring filter (to keep him from posting or saying stupid s#!+) so even if his “advisors” said, “Boss, please don’t do/say/post that,” he’s going to ignore them because “no tells Trump what to do.”
