Charles P. Pierce, over at Esquire Magazine has been reading the January 6th Committee’s 150 page report, which he links to here and, in addition to some details of the Orangeutan’s comportment when told that, no, Mr. Resident, you cannot ride the insurrection train down to the Capitol, which I will get to later, included a listing of the hand weapons seized at the magnetometers set up at his pre-riot “Stop The Steal” rally, that the loathsome one had objected to lest his thugs and oaf keepers be turned away.

It is quite an impressive, or perhaps terrifying, list when one thinks of what further damage could have been done to the Capitol Police had drumpf had his way and the crowd not been partially, at least, disarmed:

“In addition to intelligence reports indicating potential violence at the Capitol, weapons and other prohibited items were being seized by police on the streets and by Secret Service at the magnetometers for the Ellipse speech. Secret Service confiscated a haul of weapons from the 28,000 spectators who did pass through the magnetometers: 242 canisters of pepper spray, 269 knives or blades, 18 brass knuckles, 18 tasers, 6 pieces of body armor, 3 gas masks, 30 batons or blunt instruments, and 17 miscellaneous items like scissors, needles, or screwdrivers. And thousands of others purposely remained outside the magnetometers, or left their packs outside. Others brought firearms. Three men in fatigues from Broward County, Florida brandished AR-15s in front of Metropolitan police officers on 14th Street and Independence Avenue on the morning of January 6th. MPD advised over the radio that one individual was possibly armed with a “Glock” at 14th and Constitution Avenue, and another was possibly armed with a “rifle” at 15th and Constitution Avenue around 11:23 a.m. The National Park Service detained an individual with a rifle between 12 and 1 p.m. Almost all of this was known before Donald Trump took the stage at the Ellipse.“

We know that a lot of injuries to the police resulted from liberal use of pepper or “Bear Spray” in the ensuing assault on the seat of Democracy, but how much more could have been afflicted if 242 more rioters had not been relieved of their canisters. And one could argue that many of the 269 “knives or blades” might have never been brandished, but what if only 5 or 6 had been pulled out in the hand to hand combat in the coming hours? Would there have been more widows grieving the loss of their husbands.

No, Trump, they were not there to hurt you, asshole, but many were ready to hurt somebody.

Charlie Pierce relies on his frequently sardonic prose to alleviate some of the horror of the possibilities:

“No wonder El Caudillo del Mar-A-Lago wanted the magnetometers removed from the mall so that his mass of “tourists” would come armed onto the mall to hear him talk about “walking to the Capitol.” In my experience, for example, almost every church group comes to D.C. with at least 242 canisters of pepper spray tucked away on the bus behind the soda. And what kind of a grandchild would send Meemaw to the seat of democracy without a blade?“

And what does the report tell us of drumpf’s desire to accompany his band of brigands on their March of infamy?

“After he exited the stage, President Trump entered the Presidential SUV and forcefully expressed his intention that Bobby Engel, the head of his Secret Service detail, direct the motorcade to the Capitol. The Committee has now obtained evidence from several sources about a “furious interaction” in the SUV. The vast majority of witnesses who have testified before the Select Committee about this topic, including multiple members of the Secret Service, a member of the Metropolitan police, and national security officials in the White House, described President Trump’s behavior as “irate,” “furious,” “insistent,” “profane” and “heated.” Hutchinson heard about the exchange second-hand and related what she heard in our June 28, 2022, hearing from [Tony] Ornato (as did another witness, a White House employee with national security responsibilities, who shared that Ornato also recounted to him President Trump’s “irate” behavior in the Presidential vehicle.) Other members of the White House staff and Secret Service also heard about the exchange after the fact.

As it became clear that Donald Trump desired to travel to the Capitol on January 6th, a White House Security Official in the White House complex became very concerned about his intentions: To be completely honest, we were all in a state of shock. . . . it just – one, I think the actual physical feasibility of doing it, and then also we all knew what that implicated and what that meant, that this was no longer a rally, that this was going to move to something else if he physically walked to the Capitol. I – I don’t know if you want to use the word “insurrection,” “coup,” whatever. We all knew that this would move from a normal, democratic, you know, public event into something else. President Trump continued to push to travel to the Capitol even after his return to the White House, despite knowing that a riot was underway. Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary, spoke with President Trump about his desire to go to the Capitol after he returned to the White House from the Ellipse. “So to the best of my recollection, I recall him being – wanting to – saying that he wanted to physically walk and be a part of the march and then saying that he would ride the Beast if he needed to, ride in the Presidential limo.”

As Pierce notes – the mind boggles.

Thank whatever powers that be that cooler heads prevailed and, perhaps that Bobby Engel was in charge, rather than Trump’s hand picked man Tony Ornato.

What would police have done if Trump had been at the head of his mob?

Or if the magnetometers had not been in place?

Help keep the site running, consider supporting.

  1. A murderous armed fascist mob set up by the president. Two years later and the beat goes on. He’s still stirring the pot of death cult members. Wonder how many of us will get killed by the end of the new year? And some deny we’re in a war. Cue up the excuses. Maybe more of you need to enlist and learn what it takes to keep fascism at bay. 99% of our citizens are all talk & typing and tv. Maybe you have magic words to stop blind hate. It took bullets in 1941-1945. We didnt send boys to normandy with good and reasonable arguments. Now I guess the internet is your answer. Better tell the fascist who owns Twitter before he encourages and enables another killer. The rich hate democracy. Always have. Always will. Now…let’s hear the refrain: we are a nation of laws. Yeah. We poor folks know that. We incarcerate more citizens than the countries run by dictators. Oh and millions by laws that can’t be justified. Meanwhile the rich killers walk. How many citizens have the Sacklers killed? Arrest those pot smokers. Let the rich pay a small fine. Like I said, let the comfortable middle class members cue up the excuses. But but but but but…we are a nation of laws. Yeah. Tell the rich that. They won’t believe it until its proven over & over. Right Mr. Garland? No one is above the law? Where have you been? As said in a movie, ‘what are you prepared to do?’. Guess we’ll find out if another rich lawyer in a high government job is a liar.

    • Tell me you know nothing about investigating a continuing criminal enterprise without telling me that you know nothing about investigating a continuing criminal enterprise.

      Oh, wait, you just did.

Add in the probable to likely international links to all this (involving the Russian and Saudi governments, possibly also Bibi in Israel and Ordan in Hungary) and…well, I expect that this is a lot tougher problem than whatever your preferred summary execution “solutions” could ever solve.

      • Oh really? Sonny I guarantee you my experience with the injustices of our legal system go wayyyy beyond yours. Oh, and evidently those former federal prosecutors that have been questioning the inaction of the justice department given the mountain of evidence evidently know less than you sitting on ur rear with your ‘expertise’. Do enlighten us with your secret knowledge. Be sure to pass it on to those that used to work in the department.

        • I think we all wish the DOJ had filed charges on Trump and other top folks already, if not long ago. But real life isn’t some Law & Order TV episode or some other LE procedural where a crime happens and days or weeks later there’s a trial. And this is the largest investigation in FBI history, in an FBI that like the rest of the DOJ had been damaged in the Trump years and needed serious rebuilding.

With such a wide-ranging investigation experience shows you start with little fish on the periphery and work your way in and up. In order to build a criminal case that will hold up in court you’re goddamned right every bit of evidence needs to be checked and cross-checked for both admissibility and to stand up to cross-examination. There’s more than one reason there are two systems of justice in this country, one for the very rich and powerful & one for all the rest of us. Rich/powerful people can hire top attorney who are damned good at their jobs. They can bring resources to bear most criminal defendants (and their lawyers) can only dream of. That not only negates the advantage the govt. usually has, but can even tip the scales in favor of defendants since it takes all twelve jurors to convict.

Because of all that it takes time to build a really good case. And the bigger the target the better your case had better be. The stakes here are enormous. An acquittal of Trump or one of his cronies in the insurrection would be disastrous in ways we can’t even fathom. So DOJ has to get this shit right. They have one, ONE shot and it’s like back in my jarhead days where the joke regarding LAW rockets (a 66mm shoulder fired, lightweight weapon that wasn’t all that effective against tanks) was that if you had to kill a tank with one make sure their were witnesses so you could get a Medal of Honor, or maybe a Navy Cross. In truth if you were in a you vs. tank situation with only the LAW you had to let it get close, like 50 yards, and keep your nerve as you faced it from the front and hoped its machine guns didn’t kill you first. And that your shot would penetrate the (angled) front armor leading to the bottom of the tank.

That’s the position any DOJ prosecutor is in legally/court-wise when it comes time to file charges and then prosecute. So like you and others I’m frustrated at what seems like a glacial pace, but in reality I know how investigations work and that in some cases DOJ has moved with remarkable speed.

          • Understand all that, but he’s been a criminal for decades. He’s violated so many laws without consequences that I could easily argue had the law lived up to its motto, he would have been sitting in jail instead of stealing the 2016 election with our #1 enemy’s help. The hypocrisy of the law is EXACTLY why we are here, with a lot of dead people he’s left along the way. Then there’s our fucked up culture of ignorance and money worshipping that has allowed the Republicans to violate their oaths and federal law without consequences. Guess it’s easier to throw pot smokers & daddy’s without a job in jail, who can’t pay child support. Poor people have NO defense against the injustices done to them by the law, and the law acts quickly. A public defender is no defender. The rich walk or the politicians known as prosecutors ignore them as it requires too much time and resources to bring them to justice so they can pad their resume for the next election. By the way the innocent black boys railroaded into prison for the central park rape got a plaque on an entrance dedicated today. Case in point. Think rich white kids would have endured the same fate? Anyone who believes that is naive beyond belief as some clearly are here. It’s all a philosophical discussion to them. I’ve been there. I know better. Many believe the propaganda our culture has spouted for 240 years. And it is propaganda pure and simple.

          • Well said. There’s a saying that applies perfectly to the J6 Attempted Coup Case and the Stolen Classified Docs Case headed up by Special Prosecutor Jack Smith: Though the wheels of Justice grind slowly; they grind exceeding small. Expecting charges to be brought by the DOJ 1st with the Classified Docs Case in the Spring of ’23; and then with the J6 Case in the Summer of ’23. Followed in the Fall of ’23 by charges filed in the State of Georgia Election Obstruction Case. Followed in ’24 by Westchester County, NY filing tax fraud charges in ’24. Sooner than later the Orange Turd will be serving the remainder of his time as a lifer felon in either a federal or State penitentiary.

    • Hey, if you want to overthrow a government by violence, you need to bring weapons. They did. They tried. They failed. For now.
