New York Times columnist perfectly described the GOP’s overarching problem in getting their messaging straight in a post Roe world. She wrote, From Day One GOP voters took the GOP’s position on Roe v Wade seriously. Their messaging downfall is that since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, now everybody else does too.
Truer words were never spoken. Since the day Roe was decided, the sole, monolithic goal of the GOP has been to overturn the law. This is because they had no choice but to appeal to the far right bible thumping circus train that is their most passionate base.
Sure there were other slogans along the way. The Family Values Party, The Law And Order Party, The National Defense Party, the list goes on and on. But the engine that for 50 years powered the-little-train-that-sometimes-could was overturning Roe.
And then, after 50 ling years, the GOP finally found the secret sauce, and got Roe v Wade overturned. And that turned out to be the single most catastrophic court ruling in the long and winding history. because it exposed the basic weakness of the whole pro life Rube Goldberg contraption the GOP had used all along.
For one thing, it exposed the GOP’s Achilles heel in their anti abortion strategy. That strategy fueled fundraising for 50 years. GOP leadership never truly believed that they could find the Rubik’s Cube that allowed them to undo Roe. But it brought in the long green.
But when Roe was finally overturned, the Evangelical base, which had already been steadily shrinking, got turned off. What did they need the GOP for? They finally had a generations long dream in their hands. State GOP legislatures tried like hell to keep them motivated by fighting each other in a mosh pit for the most restrictive abortion laws. But to the Jesus wheezers, A win is a win. The national GOP tried desperately to fill in with the LGBTQ community, but it was no dice. Both Evangelical donations as well as Evangelical voter participation was down in 2022. By enough to turn the Red Wave into a Red Tommie Tippee spill.
The second reason is the one that Ms. Goldberg wrote about today. From the time the original Roe decision came down, everybody who wasn’t GOP looked at Roe as settled case law. After all, the Supreme Court had ruled. The GOP was just throwing a tantrum and crying in their beer. Roe was here to stay, and everybody went about their daily lives.
Until Traitor Tot rode a Vlad the Imp inspired wave to the White House, and Moscow Mitch McConnell bastardized the constitution and Senate rules. He denied Merrick Garland a vote with 140 days to go until a general election, and then rammed Amy Coney Barrett through with less than 33 days before a general election. And Roe got overturned.
And now, as Goldberg wrote, everybody was paying attention to what the GOP said about abortion. And the GOP were the ultimate dumbasses. Rather than lying fallow for six months for the rage to die down, and then quietly passing their state restrictive abortion laws, one at a time, they immediately went on a piranha feeding frenzy, with abortion as the sacrificial cow, and scarified everybody who liked the idea of a little bodily autonomy.
It got so bad that even before the first 2022 ballots were cast, the ultimate political imbecile, Donald Trump came out and told the party that their abortion stance was self destructive. And after the 2022 debacle, he excoriated the GOP for their obsession with abortion, which was costing them elections.
But like someone in an abusive relationship, the GOP just can’t quit! In safely gerrymandered deep red states, they wubs them some abortion bans, and state legislators meeting the demand is an easy way to get reelected, and the national GOP be damned. They’re keeping the party going, and 64% of Americans terrified going into 2024.
Worse yet is the interference from outside groups that the GOP can’t control. Today’s Texas ruling is a perfect example. The judge ruled that the FDA screwed up in their own approval processes, and stopped the distribution of a 99% safe abortion pill. That wasn’t the result of any GOP state legislature, it was a lawsuit filed by a far right activist group. Even if the RNC could get their howler monkeys back in the cages, they have no sway over these groups. The inmates are literally running the asylum.
And it’s not like the RNC is even trying. Today they held their first national meeting since the 2022 debacle. You might think that they would talk about moderating the message, messaging against Biden and the far left Democratic agenda, and offering solutions for inflation and high prices. But instead the RNC’s edict was to continue pushing anti abortion laws going into the 2024 election, promising a national abortion ban if the GOP retakes control in 2024.
Folks, this is worse than self destructive, this is suicidal. How many times do you have to get your asses kicked on one issue before you finally get off of that issue? But the GOP literally has no choice. Because they’re One. Trick. Ponies. For all of the other faux issues and causes they have espoused over the last 50 years, it was abortion that kept the train on the tracks. And now that it’s off of the table, they have nothing left to sell that their base will buy. Might aw well ride Charron’s Boat all the way across the River Styx I guess.
Abortion, gun control, and election fairness. They’re on the wrong side of all the main issues.
No small wonder they keep trying to deflect attention with made-up ‘cultural issues’.

Oh, the big one, they’re on the wrong side of, anthropogenic climate change. They’ve obfuscated, lied about, and distorted this issue so much, to feed their sponsor’s profits, that we might lose our whole civilisation.
They may be a “one trick pony” but they have been tricking this country since 11.22.1963.
Meanwhile, the climate burns and the “scientists ” estimations have all been wrong because the “scientists ” are all funded by big oil….

They had abortion in the time of Jesus, yet he never said a word about this sort of activity. There was public knowledge in the 18th century yet no government said a thing about this.
The Catholic church never said a thing till about 1927 and the S. Baptist didn’t begin opposing abortion till after desegregation.
You can believe personally what you want, even if it is not supported by facts, but any law in the US that is their because of religious ‘beliefs’ is illegal. So are all these sex related laws by the states. The DOJ should be on it like stink on poop.
I wish them all the worst! That this party is still alive is a bit of an astonishment to me. After all, they’ve ticked all the boxes that some rather knowledgeable people in our past have said that if they did, it would be their demise. But I guess those people never foresaw so many of the American people becoming dumb as funk! (There, I did it! Does that make the censors happy?)
