One thing is for dead certain: the next 14 months are going to be centered on God and the amazing number of ways people understand that word and concept. The evangelical wingnuts will be talking to their version of Deity and the rest of us will be casting our eyes heavenward, when we’re not busy rolling them, and saying, “Hey, we really could use some help down here. So, what’s the deal here? God personally chose Kevin McCarthy and then decided that He would allow Matt Gaetz to do him in? I mean, if God wanted to “ordain” Mike Johnson as Speaker, why didn’t he just go ahead and do that in the first place? See, I believe in free will. I don’t see God as some micro managing bell hop, where you just pray to him and he instantly appears to solve a problem and then keeps doing that all day, whether it’s a quandary about what color socks to wear or who should be in charge of the lower chamber of Congress.
My belief is that God gave us free will to see what we do with it. If we make moral choices, based upon His teachings, then he is very pleased. That’s what He wants to see. Further, He will allow us to act immorally, if that’s our choice. If we want to lie, cheat, steal, kill even, He won’t stop us.
And He also won’t stop us if we want to blame terrible outcomes on Him. 18 people got murdered in Maine in the past 12 hours. The murderer is still at large. If people want to say it was God’s will that the victims were slaughtered, we have the option to be that stupid and abdicate all responsibility for the way we run our society and our world.
God will even allow us to use the H-bomb and blow ourselves up. I sure He wouldn’t be happy about it, but I seriously doubt He would stop it.
Now you want to know what the most comical thing of all is about this issue? The “party of personal responsibility” are the people who are running and hiding from true responsibility. Whenever anything bad happens, and Mike Pence is the king of this behavior, it’s just all shirked off as “God’s will.”
God never willed you to be a jerk, Mike. And I’m sure he didn’t “ordain” Mike Johnson for a role which is so clearly over his head. That’s the doing of the Republicans. Get a clue and grow up.

A Sunday school teacher once told me his definition of character (that he taught his pupils) was: “You are what you think when you’re alone with your thoughts.” If you’re thinking good and constructive things, that’s who you are, conversely if you’re plotting how to cheat somebody and get away with it, you’re that person.
None of us is all one or the other, but I think this man was correct in his view that that was the basic dividing line.

The first lie recorded is in Genesis, after God made a point of telling Adam and Eve to do whatever they liked in the garden, but DO NOT TOUCH the tree of knowledge of good and EVIL. It would bring death. The serpent came along with the first lie, when he told Eve God was bullshitting her, and if she ate the fruit, SHE WOULDNT DIE. Oh, and for all you Biblical ‘experts’, please explain how, if God is all knowing…why is He asking Adam, where are you? Or, in the book of Job, why did he have to ask Satan where have you been?
