The newest macabre chapter in the COVID Chronicles is a barrage of early morning, all caps tweets, from the patient in chief. They are what you would expect, “PROTECT THE SECOND AMENDMENT! VOTE!” Supposedly steroids make you high and Trump is either that or bored, and so he’s on the tweet box wearing his tiny thumbs to the bone. Gabriel Sherman is reporting that Trump’s behavior is so weird that even Donald Trump, Jr. wants to stage an intervention.

According to sources, Don Jr. has told friends that he tried lobbying Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Jared Kushner to convince the president that he needs to stop acting unstable. “Don Jr. has said he wants to stage an intervention, but Jared and Ivanka keep telling Trump how great he’s doing,” a source said. Don Jr. is said to be reluctant to confront his father alone. “Don said, ‘I’m not going to be the only one to tell him he’s acting crazy,’” the source added.

One area where the family seems united is over the president’s manic tweeting early Monday morning. After Trump sent out more than a dozen all-caps tweets, the Trump children told people they want Trump to stop. “They’re all worried. They’ve tried to get him to stop tweeting,” a source close to the family told me.

And probably memories of Grandpa Fred at the end are dancing in Junior’s head and there’s a vision for you.

There is a long history in the Trump family of denying serious illness. According to a Trump family friend, Trump’s father, Fred Trump Sr., insisted on working even after his Alzheimer’s disease advanced in the 1990s. “To retire is to expire!” Fred Sr. would say. The friend said that as Fred Sr.’s disease worsened––he once came down the stairs wearing three neckties––the family created a system so that Fred could think he was still running the Trump Organization. Every day Fred Sr. would go to the office in Brooklyn and they would give him blank papers to sort through and sign. The phone on Fred’s desk was set up so that it could only dial out to his secretary. “Fred pretended to work,” the family friend said.

Fred pretended to work and Donald pretends to lead. Tweeting platitudes and slogans constitutes leadership, a platform and a campaign 29 days out from the election — we guess. Governance by tweet has been Trump’s MO for the past four years, at least he’s consistent.

I have a fantasy of Mike Pence and Mitch McConnell playing rock, paper, scissors and the loser has to tell Donald that Pence is taking over because Mitch has to try to save the down ballot. …and  I hate to keep bringing this up….but does anybody know where the nuclear football is?

      • Dt. Strangelove ended with the holocaust of nuclear war started by a system designed by idiots & started by a madman. You find that comforting? Huh? The best outcome was slim pickens hoopin & hollerin ridin the bomb to oblivion. That would be the best spot given the horror to come.

        • I think thank goodness dr strangelove came out to show how crazy things can get. All it takes is one madman and a system that doesn’t account for one mistake. Mania is a potential side effect of dexamethasone.

There is the story of Nixon being drunk and depressed… and somebody (general or sec. of defense) who told folks … to contact him first. This was told by presidential historian Stephen Beschloss on Lawrence O’Donell Show.

  1. A person who is a medical professional, over at DK, said that one of the side effects of the steroid is possible mania. None of us really wanted that, on top of his already bizarre mental state.

  2. Fredo speaks… Seriously, his daddy is going to flip the hell out when he finds out about this. And I predict wannabe Princess Ivanka will be the one to shiv her brother Eric in the back to be the one to do it!

As for Fred Trump Sr. and giving him blank pages to “read” two events leapt into my mind. First was back when Trump claimed (falsely as we all knew) he’d give up control of goings on at the Trump Org. – remember that table stacked with manila folders full of “documents” as a partial indication of how complex a thing it was for Trump to be signing away “control?” Full of blank pieces of paper! Jump forward to this weekend and what did we get? A pic of Donald Trump “working” at a table signing some “important” document that upon closer inspection turned out to be – wait for it – a blank sheet of paper!
