While Lauren Boebert has been cutting a campaign ad with her youngest son, her oldest, Tyler Boebert, 19, made an appearance in Garfield County Court today in connection with the car break-ins and property thefts he allegedly committed in Rifle, Colorado earlier this year. He was dressed in an “all-black” suit, which I take to mean that the shirt and tie were black as well. That outfit, in the lexicon of male sartorial choices, is peacocked by gangsters, pimps, and movie producers, although the gangsters and movie producers are known to wear the black shirts open with gold chains underneath, nestled in their chest hair.

So we are impressed that Tyler Boebert chose the pimp look. Telegraphing much? Two of his partners in crime were under age females that he made a sex tape with, so we are not reaching into the unknown here, merely extrapolating from the obvious.

District Judge John F. Neiley also noticed Boebert’s wardrobe choices because he said, “Thank you for the attire.” I appreciate it when people dress for court.” I daresay his honor has seen a few pimps appear before him in his time on the bench. But I wonder how many children of the wealthy and powerful he has had come before him and say that they didn’t have the money to hire a lawyer? This has to be a case of first impression. Westword:

Despite the spiffiness, Representative Lauren Boebert‘s eldest son — who is now nineteen — went on to claim he was having trouble finding a lawyer that he could afford to represent him in the felony case.

“We are working to hire an attorney, but it’s just been kind of hard with the prices,” Tyler told Neiley. “Worst case scenario, if we can’t get something figured out with the lawyer then we’re going to apply for a public defender or whatever works best for me.”

According to Tyler, he is currently working to obtain discovery in his case and was instructed by defense attorneys to wait on the official advisement of his charges, which happened today, before hiring a lawyer.

Judge Neiley detailed all fourteen counts that Tyler is currently facing, including felony counts for identity theft that carry a possible sentence of two to six years and misdemeanor charges for criminal trespass, which carry a possible sentence of up to 364 days behind bars and fines up to $1,000. […]

Neiley suggested that Tyler apply for a public defender while his hunt for a lawyer continues. “I always think it’s a good idea to maybe do both, because if you qualify, you have options,” the judge said. “We can set this off for a little bit of time for you to make that decision.”

Now this begs the obvious question: Why can’t Ma and Pa Boebert hire sonny a lawyer? Ma makes $174,000 a year as a United States Representative and Pa makes $478,000 a year as a “consultant” to the gas industry. That means both parents combined have an income of $652,000, or over 6/10s of a million dollars a year — and they can’t cut loose to get their number one son a criminal defense lawyer? They can’t or they won’t?

Investigators say Tyler and his pals — two female minors and one male minor — swiped wallets and credit cards and attempted to run up tabs with them.

One denied purchase for $717 was made on shein.com, which is an online style and accessory marketplace for independent brands and sellers. The group was seen on surveillance cameras using the credit cards at the Kum & Go in the 100 block of East 26th Street in Rifle and a Love’s Travel Stop in Parachute. […]

Tyler is due back in court on May 9 for an “appearance of counsel” in his felony theft case, according to Garfield County records. His father, Jayson Boebert, will also be appearing in Garfield County court on April 15 for a disposition hearing related to charges filed against him for an altercation at the Miner’s Claim Restaurant in Silt with Lauren.

Jayson is currently facing disorderly conduct charges, third-degree trespass and obstruction of a peace officer. He did not respond to requests for comment Thursday related to his son’s court hearing.

Lauren’s camp, meanwhile, declined to comment when asked if she’d be helping Tyler with paying for a lawyer. The CD3 congresswoman, who is currently running to represent Congressional District 4, has previously said that he should be held accountable for his actions like any ordinary citizen, but she will remain by his side no matter what happens.

Frankly, if the Boeberts don’t pay for a lawyer for Tyler, that might be the best parenting decision that they ever made. This way Tyler gets to find out up close and personal what the criminal justice system is for the poor, with a public defender. I have no doubt that whatever public defender he would get would do a diligent job for him but there is no way that a public defender will ever do what a high priced criminal defense lawyer will do for a client — Donald Trump being exhibit “A” to this proposition. Tyler Boebert, for example, won’t find a public defender moving the court no less than ten times to delay a trial, for example. When you can pay millions of dollars to a team of lawyers to do creative lawyering you get things that you don’t get on the county tab, that much is clear.

Good. I hope young Boebert gets his lumps. He’s 19 and maybe if he is sentenced to the slammer for a while he can come out a better man and ready to get serious about making a life rather than being an overgrown juvenile delinquent. Or, maybe he could write his life story growing up with his eccentric, shall we say, parents? He could sell it to Hollywood. Or, prisons do have a way of taking the average small potatoes crook and making him into a real gangster, maybe that will happen, too.

Tyler’s already got the wardrobe, either way.

  1. I suppose his privilege allows him to film himself molesting underage children without repercussion………

…….for us commoners, that would be a 30-40 year sentence in the penitentiary, and rightfully so.

The most he’ll see here is minimal probation if the case is not dismissed altogether.

This two tiered “justice system” is getting way out of hand.

    *shakes head*

    • On the “molesting” bit, that may not be quite as clear-cut as you seem to be suggesting. ALL we know is the girls are under 18 (I haven’t seen reporting that indicates their actual ages nor WHEN the sex happened). A lot of states operate with a “Romeo & Juliet” system which allows for an “of age” person to have sex with a “minor” if there’s no more than a 2 year age gap so PROSECUTORS may not bother dealing with “sex” issues (if the minor’s parents want to proceed with charges, that’s another issue). Also, Colorado’s age of consent (after a quick search) is 17–legally, still a minor but the law says is capable of consent (provided no mental impairment is involved).
Please remember that “minor” does NOT mean “little kid” in all cases. (Also, I’m by no means defending Boebert’s actions but a lot of laws involving “minors” are not equal. In some states, a 16 year old can be tried as an “adult” for various crimes if no mental impairment or deficiency can be determined. )

      • Depends on the state. If one of the participants is 18 or older and the other is a minor, there could be at least a statutory rape issue and consent doesn’t enter the picture at all-not when it’s an adult with a minor. My roommate’s kid went thru this hell-both of the kids were in high school in Montana but he was 18 and the girl was 17. The boy played hell getting out of the mess especially since the girl’s bitch of a mother was out for blood because her little girl was de-flowered. What finally turned things around was the fact the 18 year old was going to announce to all and sundry, and in court under oath, that momma’s little girl was NOT a virgin and was going to provide examples of who else got to f*ck her. Sorry but this time I’m on the boy’s side and his dad thanks G_d almost every day the girl was a known skank. That horrid I know but there it is.

This is a messy issue in some states-kids will be kids and want to experiment and when you have 18 and 19 year old seniors dating juniors who may be 17, it is problematic.

  2. All a stint in “the slammer” will do for him is make him a better criminal.
He will become a recurring guest of the prison-industrial complex.

  3. “…This has to be a case of first impression…”

Very, very good, Ursula. This is a wonderful, first time ever seen quote from Fairy Godmother Aileen Cannon. Lovely use of her own words.
