Air Force Suddenly Making “Unusual” Stopovers at Trump Properties

The only surprise here is the utter brazenness.

Since April, the House Oversight Committee has been investigating why it was that crews from C-17 military transport planes make unusual stops on route to the Middle East, both coming and going. They crews stop to stay at Trump’s luxury Scotland resort, and the military has not answered the questions that have arisen surrounding this bizarre event. It is unknown whether this is now a routine practice or whether it was an isolated occurrence.

From Politico, this is flat stunning:

The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into U.S. military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland. According to a letter the panel sent to the Pentagon in June, the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport — the closest airport to Trump Turnberry — since October 2017, fuel that would be cheaper if purchased at a U.S. military base. The letter also cites a Guardian report that the airport provided cut-rate rooms and free rounds of golf at Turnberry for U.S. military members.

In other words, part of that $11 million to “refuel” and land at the airport found its way into Trump’s pocket through official government use of his Scotland resort.

Were that not bad enough, the Pentagon seems committed to hiding whatever it is doing:

“The Defense Department has not produced a single document in this investigation,” said a senior Democratic aide on the oversight panel. “The committee will be forced to consider alternative steps if the Pentagon does not begin complying voluntarily in the coming days.”

The most powerful, “executive agency,” the Defense Department, is now also ignoring Congress.

Normally, military flights to the Middle East make their stopover at – surprise! – U.S. military bases, where the fuel is much much cheaper, the accommodations nice, but don’t approach the $300 to $400 a night required for a luxury resrot. But, for some strange reason, the planes have stopped at Glasgow and the crews stayed up the road at a resort that just happens to be owned by the man who has used his office to bilk the public out of every dollar he possibly can.

And we can also feel some sympathy for the crews, who did not make the choice, and evidently had to shovel out some of their own money, because, well:

One crew member was so struck by the choice of hotel — markedly different than the Marriotts and Hiltons the 176th maintenance squadron is used to — that he texted someone close to him and told him about the stay, sending a photo and noting that the crew’s per diem allowance wasn’t enough to cover food and drinks at the ritzy resort.

The president’s greed created a situation such that a crew, on an official mission for our country, had to shell out some of their own money to cover the cost of meals and beverages, at a Trump resort, because Trump’s prices exceeded the government allotment.

Let that settle in a bit.

Let’s review. Other nations routinely book entire floors at Trump resorts and pay maximum price – no discounts – in order to gain favor with Trump who cares about money above all else, and rewards those who line his pockets. Trump often stays at his own resorts on his many vacations requiring his entourage of aids and secret service personnel to also stay at Trump’s resort with costs paid out of the U.S. Treasury. And Trump has informed the world that next year’s G7 will be held at his resort at Doral for the exact same reason, it is an event where people pay to attend, so might as well have them attend a location which lines Trump’s pockets.

I sense a trend here. Shocking that the man who has valued one thing throughout his life – money – continues to value that one thing above being president of the United States.

But, as Politico notes, the military money takes the concern to an entirely different level, which might be why the Pentagon has refused to speak to the House about the matter. (The Senate could not care less, they will let Trump declare himself emperor for life before they cross him.)

The spending at the Trump property — raises concerns about conflicts of interest and possible violations of the domestic emoluments clause of the Constitution, which prohibits the president from receiving any compensation from the federal government other than his salary. After being elected, Trump chose not to fully divest himself from his business interests, choosing instead to put his holdings in a trust that he can receive money from at any time.

Trump never divested himself from his assets. Other presidents divest their securities and other investments, turning them over to a trustee who invests the money in a manner kept secret from the president. The president can never know whether any particular decision would benefit him personally.

Trump, on the other hand, simply put his assets in a trust to be run by his children. He knows exactly what he owns, and clearly still directs the businesses. The conflicts of interest are clear, he makes no real attempt to hide them. It is a brazen “What are you going to do about it?” attitude that Republicans allow without question – because Trump is a Republican – while House Democrats get largely ignored or fought.

I have said this before. This is what living in an autocratic banana republic looks like from the inside. The leader answers to no one, he enriches himself at citizens expense, with no worry, excuse or shame, only entitlement. People who oppose the behavior get punished.

Last thought, recall the money and hours Republicans spent investigating Benghazi, convinced Obama and Clinton did something nefarious. Recall the outrage. Shameless

  1. When I was growing up “Championship Wrestling” wasn’t the spectacle Trump’s pals Jim & Linda McMahon (and others) turned it in to. Believe it or not it was for the most part a lot cheesier and tended to be so lame the fun in watching was how obviously fake it all was. And the playacting was hilarious! One friend never wanted to have it on when we are all at his house because (he was a change of life baby) his dad was retired and believed every bit of it was real – embarrassing as hell for the poor guy and while we tried not to give him too hard a time about it we were after all kids and ripping on each other was part of growing up.

I mention this because one of the main aspects of the show was (especially in tag team matches) the referee allowing himself to be distracted from dreadful goings on while a wrestler’s manage and usually the entire crowd was screaming at him to turn around and look at what was “happening” to some poor guy out on the mat while the ref was FAR more focused on admonishing the complaining manager.

That’s the feeling I get from the Speaker and others who have counseled against impeachment. As you note there is so much out there in plain sight, and even if some of the stuff from Part 1 of the Mueller report can’t be covered in an Impeachment trial in the Senate for National Security reasons (the revealing of sources and methods) there is some that can and there’s plenty in Part 2 on Obstruction of Justice. Again as you note that’s some complicated stuff, but there is so much that’s been out in the open and that, if the country was focused (and they would be) on the abuses of power the Obstruction of Justice would be a lot easier for the public to get on board with even if they don’t understand the legal minutia.

And through it all the ONE, single talking point from every Democrat on every TV show/interview and to every single print journalist should be to say “Republicans would be OUTRAGED if a Democratic President did any one of the things Trump has been Impeached for. If they say otherwise they are LYING!”

I’m not naïve. I don’t think enough Senate Republicans, and maybe not even a single one would cross over and vote to convict but the process WOULD define the terms of the election instead of allowing Trump and the GOP to do so. Would it bring out extra Trump supporters? I’m sure it would. However it will cost him voters who went for him last time around as well as we saw in the midterms. It would also hand Democrats down the ballot all the way to the local level a great talking point about the corruption and moral bankruptcy of the Republican Party.

It would also energize OUR voters to levels beyond November 2018 and I believe help us sign up a whole bunch of new ones (especially in red states and/or rural areas) who have either given up on the process or never gotten involved in the first place & that can make all the difference in retaking the Senate.

So yes, we should take the layups and when the layup can be a slam dunk throw that sucker down in their faces.

  2. I gather they set up the Prestwick stop in late 2016, but I don’t know why, except maybe to keep it a working airport. But staying at Himself’s place, which isn’t close to the airport, that’s a brazen emoluments clause violation.

  3. Not gonna argue with you on the fly in. I’ll wait until there is more information to see if there is more to it.

But, comparing it to Benghazi is bad form. People, including an American ambassador, died because of inept leadership from Hilary’s State Department and she flat out lied to the families of the deceased about the reason for the chaos there.

Even if you believe your heroes did nothing wrong concerning Benghazi, comparing the murder of four people to a questionable expenditure, illegal or not, does not come close to being comparable to dead people.

    • CD – They investigated it for YEARS and your own Republican committee – the last of many committtees – found no wrongdoing. That was the comparison, how eager Republicans are to investigate political issues that Tnot impact Republicans, and yet willing to let literally anything go with respect to this Administration.
That is a valid comparrison. Benghazi ONLY ended when it provided Republicans no political value, once Trump won. Suddenly it didn’t matter at all.
That is why I brought it up. There was no wrongdoing found with respect to Benghazi, we know that bc the last (of many) Republican committee looking into it ended without finding wrongdoing.
We have a promise from Jason Chavetz to continue to investigate Hillary and Benghazi prior to her losing. Just as soon as the election was over, the Republican oversight committee suddenly changed to the Trump protection racket.
That every elected Republican still fears speaking one word against Trump – in spite of clear obstruction, in spite of clear conflicts of interest, speaks volumes. Yes, Americans died at Benghazi – four – and more than that died in AFrica under strange circumstances there. But it was no “scandal” in any way. It was a political tool, nothing more.
Republicans are dying to investigate the FISA issue without addressing the fact that it was a JUDGE that signed off on it bc there were so many Russian contacts. These are not opinions, these are fact.

      • That must mean after three years of investigating collusion in committees and with a special prosecutor finding no such thing along with no referral of obstruction that the case is closed. It was Mueller’s job to refer criminal wrongdoing to be prosecuted and he decided there wasn’t enough there to proceed.

I kept hearing the query, “Why wouldn’t you want an investigation into election shenanigans?”

The same question applies to Benghazi. Why wouldn’t you want a thorough investigation into four dead Americans including a diplomat?”

        • Very shortly your false equivalences are going to be blown apart by the sheer volume of inquiries finding criminal activity of the most banal sort at ALL levels of this administration.
‘Butter Emails’ from years ago aren’t even going to register against the scale of larceny and corruption already proved, and Dimwit Donny isn’t going to have a pet senate and attorney general covering for him.
After the Republican hypocricy and dishonesty are fully exposed this time, the mood from the public won’t be to forget and ‘move on’, proper punishment will be demanded and dispensed.

    • YOUR hero is a criminal and you need to get a colonoscopy bigly, you’ve got something stuck up your ass, seriously orange. иди трахни себя
