It isn’t every day that you’re going to see a new political movement take root. And it most assuredly isn’t every day that the group will identify itself as the “not crazy” party. This is new in 2021. Considering how the GOP has crashed and burned in such a spectacular fashion that images of Howard Hughes crashing his plane through houses in Beverly Hills and the Hindenberg exploding in the air, raining down hell, come to mind it makes a great deal of sense that the American Renewal group would go to lengths to distinguish itself as a group of sane Republicans and Independents and therefore Not Trump. That’s why he’s so upset

Without further ado, the rebirth of the GOP:

A CALL FOR AMERICAN RENEWAL

These United States, born of noble convictions and aspiring to high purpose, have been an exemplar of self-government to humankind. Thus, when in our democratic republic, forces of conspiracy, division, and despotism arise, it is the patriotic duty of citizens to act collectively in defense of liberty and justice. We, therefore, declare our intent to catalyze an American renewal, and to either reimagine a party dedicated to our founding ideals or else hasten the creation of such an alternative. We call for a rebirth of the American cause and do so in partnership and loyal competition with others committed to the preservation of our Union. With abiding belief in the value and potential of every soul and with goodwill for all, we hereby dedicate ourselves to these principles and make common cause in the flourishing of this great nation and its diverse states, communities, and citizens.

Democracy. We seek the preservation and betterment of our democratic republic and the endurance of our self-government, free from interference and defended against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We support reforms that make our system more accessible, transparent, and competitive, oppose the disenfranchisement of voters, and reject populism and illiberalism, whether of the right or the left.

Founding Ideals. We reaffirm the self-evident truth that all persons are created equal and free, having the same inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that it is the prerogative of all to make personal decisions in accordance with their free will. We, therefore, condemn all forms of bigotry such as racism, religious intolerance, sexism, and persecution based on sexual orientation.

Constitutional Order. We uphold the Constitution as the inviolable and collective contract protecting liberty and justice for all, and honor the essential separation and balance it establishes among coequal branches of the federal government and the states.

Truth. We recognize truth and reason as essential to a free and just society, and expect our leaders, citizens, and press to seek and promote them. We oppose the employment of fear-mongering, conspiracism, and falsehoods and instead support evidence-based policymaking and honest discourse.

Rule of Law. We maintain that the impartial rule of law is essential to a free and just society to protect the rights and property of all people. No one is above the law, and our criminal justice system must treat everyone equally without discrimination based on race, status or other unrelated factors.

Ethical Government. We demand that public officials and aspiring leaders – regardless of party – act with integrity and honor, the absence of which is a harbinger for abuses of power that threaten the republic.

Pluralism. We are committed to a pluralistic society defined by its ideals and welcoming to all peoples rightfully seeking safety, opportunity, and a better life by becoming contributing members of our diverse nation. We reject the notion that America should be characterized by the races, birthplaces, religious affiliations, or partisan identities of its citizens.

Civic Responsibility. We believe that all Americans share civic responsibility, which is essential for our self-government and national success. Thriving communities are built by faithfully engaged citizens working to overcome differences with mutual respect and the bonds of civil affection. The solutions to many of America’s greatest challenges can only be found in our diverse communities.

Opportunity. We recognize open, market-based economies as consistent with our natural liberty and the optimal means of ensuring economic mobility and the allocation of scarce resources. We support sensible and limited regulation, including to ensure equal opportunity, and affirm government’s vital role in assisting vulnerable citizens, while encouraging self-reliance and ingenuity without the impediments of cronyism and corruption.

Free Speech. We reaffirm the Constitution’s guarantee of free speech and freedom of the press as essential to accountable government and the American way of life. We sustain the rights of individuals and private entities to exercise this freedom, even to express unpopular views, and condemn efforts to erode press freedom and public support for its vital role.

Conservation. We consider vital our shared stewardship of America’s resources – natural, environmental, and financial. We accept responsibility to conserve for ourselves and future generations these public assets, and to protect them from both natural and man-made harms.

Common Defense & Welfare. We uphold that government is instituted by the people to secure those essential, collective goods that individuals cannot attain for themselves, particularly providing for the common defense and promoting the general welfare. We, therefore, support policies that further public safety, health, and defense as required for enduring national sovereignty and prosperity.

Leadership. Having thrived in the abundance of a choice land, we believe that these United States must work in conjunction with its friends and allies to advance worthy interests abroad and to promote freedom by example and with the judicious application of power.

Early signatories include: Barbara Comstock; Bill Weld; Christine Todd Whitman; Paul Rosenzweig; Charles Djou; Charlie Dent; Charlie Sykes; Chris Vance; Mary Peters, Mickey Edwards; Claudine Schneider; Denver Riggleman; Evan McMullin; Jim Glassman; Jim Kolbe; Michael Chertoff; Michael Steele; Mike Madrid; Miles Taylor; Reid Ribble; Shermichael Singleton; Tara Setmayer; Ted Roosevelt; Mona Charen; Olivia Troye; David Durenberger; George Conway; Eliot Cohen; Elizabeth Neumann; Gabriel Schoenfeld; Bob Inglis; Arne Carlson; Thomas Petri; Tim Boyle; Tom Campbell; Tom Coleman; Bob Worsley; Chad Mayes…

Interesting to see who’s not there. George Conway and Tara Setmeyer from the Lincoln Project are there, but no Rick Wilson, Steve Schmidt or Reed Galen. Stuart Stevens is conspicuous by his absence. I would have thought this was right up his alley, all of their alleys. I would have also expected Adam Kinzinger’s name. But perhaps this is just a grassroots beginning and a lot of other people will join up in short order.

Certainly a return to sanity on the part of the GOP is greatly to be desired. Any progress in that direction is to be welcomed. Just the open admission that the party is off the rails, something you won’t hear from its top leadership, is a major concession.

Help keep the site running, consider supporting.

    • The problem is, always, with a third political party is that it bleeds off votes and generally from the Democrats. That is my chief worry here. If this results in a revitalized GOP, that’s a different story altogether. I think that the current GOP may have to lose a bit more — or a lot more — to get into a frame of mine where they want to make sweeping changes.

      • Sure, Ursula, Dems are going to go for a bunch of folks who are slightly less power-hungry and insane than Trump and forget what they did to this country in the 2000s. I haven’t forgotten nor have I forgiven.

Meanwhile, subtracting 20 to 25 million voters from that 76 million so many constantly freak out about is only going to hurt the GQP.

      • Ursula, I’m almost positive they are not planning to run a presidential candidate, so whoever the Trombies put up will have to run against Biden or possibly Harris. Now as I’m sure you remember, very few of the Republicans who voted for Biden also voted for down-ticket Dems. The new party will run their own candidates in tight state and local races to provide an alternative to the Trumpublicans. Many traditional GOP voters will appreciate that. That will give a better chance for Democrats to win some of these contests. In this way the new party will gradually destroy the Trombies and open a space for themselves as the “loyal opposition.” The GOP will fade back into the fringes of American politics.

  1. Liz Cheney is determined not to let Trump back in the White House, or so she says. I would think this group is smart enough not to take votes from Democrats but mostly Republicans. 30% of Republicans are not buying into the Big Lie and their numbers would be crucial.

    • Oh, they ARE that smart, Gerald. As bets go, that’s a mortal lock. They understand what I have long known: in order to be relevant again, short term sacrifices are in order. That will include being out of power to play spoiler.

    • “30% of Republicans are not buying into the Big Lie…”

I’m curious as to where you got this figure (30%)? I really hope you’re right, but I’d like the source. TY

      • Um, I’m guessing that 30% comes from from the polls which have said that 70% of Republicans believe Trump’s “big lie”–that there was something hinky about the last election. 100 – 70 = 30.

  2. I would sign that document, and I believe all patriotic Americans could sign that document. It is mostly a brief, non-partisan summary of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, something that by definition, all patriotic Americans support. that document does not make anyone a member of a particular political party.

    • Yeah, count me out. My actions as a True Blue Democrat would make my signing that thing superfluous. Watch what I do, not what I say…especially when someone else presumes to do the speaking for me.

  3. Game on…saw this one coming three miles away. As to non-signatories in the Lincoln Project, think I have an answer. They’re staying out of the spotlight because of last year’s unpleasantness with that founder who shall stay nameless. Put their names on it, it suddenly becomes about said founder, which muddles the message. They’re good enough PR guys to know that.

    • PS- this is what I found on dictionary.com for illiberalism: adjective
      narrowminded; bigoted.
      Archaic.
not generous in giving; miserly; stingy.
Chiefly Literary. without culture or refinement; unscholarly; vulgar.
I find this interesting and amusing.

    • Illiberal is whatever violates the principles of classical liberalism (which is not what it’s called liberalism in the US)

  4. I keep seeing comments (not necessarily here) that this new party will never be strong enough to change the GOP. But their goal is not to change the GOP, their goal is to destroy its political power. And that I think they can do.

Another theory: that Liz Cheney wants the new party’s nomination for president in 2024. But that would be premature. I think she’s smarter than that. She may want to be the leader, but for them to run any presidential candidate would weaken their position rather than strengthen it. Of course things may look very different after 2022, but the way things are going I don’t think they will run a candidate for president. If their goal is to obliterate the Trumpists, they’d best throw their support to Biden.

I don’t think they will run a presidential

  5. Restore the sanity to the international criminal party that has been ravaging America since the criminal Reagan? Thom Hartmann recited a list of Reagan’s crimes that have played out since ( sorry shark it’s Reagan not the dems unless they adopted his policies), & it’s unbelievable. Making a deal to sell arms to our enemies to broker a deal to win the election, & running a scheme to provide arms to the murderous junta in central America by importing massive amounts of cocaine via military transport was small potatoes. No Virginia, the GOP’s ‘sanity’ is, in itself, propaganda. Fact.

    • Why are you sorry by attributing Reagan’s misdeeds to the source? But more importantly, why are you and Hartmann still reliving a past that has nothing to do with what Cheney and Co will bring to the future? Reagan’s dead while Cheney is still very much alive. I already knew she was the bad guy, remember?

  6. Back when Republicans could be the good guys in 1912, Teddy Roosevelt’s 3rd party finished 2nd giving the election to Woodrow Wilson. Ross Parot took enough republican voters away from Bush 1 to let Clinton win.

I don’t see a 3rd party happening in the near future. I think it’s going to be a “One flew over the coo-coo nest” roundup and Nurse Ratchet will get control of the asylum.
