I have a message for the Republican party. The message is from Abe Lincoln, whom they always tout as the first Republican president. Here it is:

“In this age, in this country, public sentiment is everything. With it, nothing can fail; against it, nothing can succeed. Whoever molds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes, or pronounces judicial decisions.”

That was what Lincoln said in the first of the Lincoln/Douglas debates and nothing has changed. Not one jot.

Now watch the next generation of lawmakers the high school students of Oxford High School, where Ethan Crumbley murdered their classmates, take to the streets.

Students Demand Action is a nationwide group which is organizing walk outs. Another one is scheduled for Long Island, New York.

This is the sixties reborn, folks. Fellow boomers, we have been here and we have done this. These kids are us.

And the children shall lead. Hallelujah!

Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, John Cornyn, Donald Trump, all of youse sik fuks, to quote GOP candidate Gina Forte, the times they are a changing. Add to that, the more things change, the more they are the same, and let’s leave on this note:

What’s new is old and what’s old is new.

I am elated. I feel 50 years younger, right now. I don’t know what, if anything, these kids have planned for this weekend, while the NRA convention takes place, but it should be good.

And the children shall lead.

  1. It was almost sixty years ago when Bob Dylan wrote this song but it sure does seem timeless doesn’t it?

    “The Times They Are A-Changin'”

    Come gather ’round people
    Wherever you roam
    And admit that the waters
    Around you have grown
    And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
    Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’

    Come writers and critics
    Who prophesize with your pen
    And keep your eyes wide
    The chance won’t come again
    And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’
    For the loser now
    Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’

    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don’t stand in the doorway
    Don’t block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    The battle outside ragin’
    Will soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’

    Come mothers and fathers
    Throughout the land
    And don’t criticize
    What you can’t understand
    Your sons and your daughters
    Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’

    The line it is drawn
    The curse it is cast
    The slow one now
    Will later be fast
    As the present now
    Will later be past
    The order is rapidly fadin’
    And the first one now
    Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’
