If this actually happens, it would be a defining moment in the GOP, much like when you play Russian roulette and fate chooses the chamber with the bullet in it.  That kind of defining moment. Bear in mind, this is the party that protects Matt Gaetz while giving Liz Cheney no end of grief. They meet next week and here’s what is being contemplated. Axios:

House Republicans are moving closer to ousting Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from leadership, and are already considering replacements — including Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) and Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), congressional aides tell Axios.

What we’re hearing: Most members recognize Cheney can’t be succeeded by a white man, given their top two leaders — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) — fill that demographic.

  • Selling such a team in a midterm year would compound the GOP’s challenges with suburban women.

  • The conference meets next Wednesday, May 12. Most members expect the process to oust Cheney to begin then, whether formally or informally, after some of McCarthy’s top lieutenants broadened their complaints against her.

  • It would take up to a two-thirds vote of the 212 caucus members to replace her — a relatively high bar if a secret ballot is held.

This is the same House caucus that gave Marjorie Taylor Greene a standing ovation. At least a sizeable number of them did.

If the GOP does this, it will be stunning. It’s plausible, too. Just like the GOP censuring Mitt Romney almost took place.

  1. From an outsider’s viewpoint, it would seem that the only qualification for a position in theQQP is a slavish loyalty to the idiot in chief. Yjhe more drooling the boot-licking, the higher the qualification.

    • And will continue to be so until they collectively wake up to how Trump voters are never coming back. Look, forget the oft-cited 74 million that voted for Trump in 2020, alright? The fallout from that election continues to make sure those kind of numbers will never show up again for them. From McConnell to Romney’s suck-up niece, there’s nobody left in the leadership with the flex and imagination to make them relevant to tbis century. This is what happens when you bet it all on an aging demographic with a very limited shelf life. Comic shops made the same bad bet years and years ago and now they’re nearly extinct as a business.

  2. It’s probable to near certain that Darth Cheney’s daughter knew about this well before now and already has a plan in place to deal with it. My guess is that she has enough support to make the vote fail or that she’ll be pulling a big move of her own in the event of an ouster. Either way, this isn’t ending the way they think it will.

    • I wonder if Liz and her dad have been at work behind the scenes. Ole Dick is truly a “dick” but he had to be appalled at Trump’s rise and eventual takeover of the GOP. Dick Cheney’s GOP connections and influence go back to when Trump was a rich socialite grubbing a job with his daddy and screwing his way through the NYC social scene. He knows where a lot of bodies are buried, but more importantly where the watering cans of both private and corporate big dollar donors are – and again don’t forget about those buried bodies. The elder Cheney spent his adult life building the old school GOP and then making it truly ruthless in its quest for power. Even with Obama’s popularity he worked with others (like the Koch Brothers) to pump money into getting and keeping conservatives in power. With a fire hose! His daughter Liz became a part of all that, which means (I think) she knows every dirty secret and every lever to push her ole dad learned about or created himself.

Corporate America and even the Chamber of Commerce has tried to signal to the current GOP leadership that Trump broke the old model and they are going to have to step back and regroup even if it means putting up with higher taxes and regulations for a while. McConnell at least is old enough and experienced enough to know the score, and has either been blinded by an orange-hued mirage he thinks is the finish line cum promised land, or just too afraid of Trump to do what Liz Cheney has just done. Mitch made his big speech and ever since has been trying to take it back to curry favor with Trump. Same with Lindsay Graham, Keven McCarthy. They all took back strong criticism of Trump and started lining up to kiss his ass.

Liz Cheney has just shamed them by doubling down on her criticism of Trump. No takebacks or “please let me have a do-over” from her! I can only imagine Trump’s fury, at a WOMAN taking him on in the first place and then when he tries to do to her what he successfully did when he brought the GUYS to heel failing. Just imagine his screaming into his phone at those guys about how they are allowing some WOMAN to talk to HIM that way and remain in a position of power in the Party. You can bet Trump has rather colorfully questioned their manhood, threatened them and who knows what else.

But the thing is, I think it’s highly possible that you’re right about Cheney being prepared for what’s coming via getting solid commitments from the GOP donor class (the ones who not only max out individual contributions and fund the think tanks but also pour fortunes into the political slush funds/retirement accounts known as Super PACS) to either keep the money spigot turned off, or for those that have only talked about doing so to turn that handle. THAT would be a true crisis for the current iteration of the GOP.

Sure, they might think they can do what Democrats have turned into an art form and get most of what they need via individuals making small dollar donations, but they are way behind on that front. Worse, Trump has been demanding the average folks send those donations to HIS “leadership fund” to distribute as HE sees fit. And as we all, including and especially McConnell and other GOP elected officials precious little of what Trump gets from conservative small dollar donors will get passed along to other people!

There just might be a day of reckoning coming before we thought might be possible. That awful choice between losing little or losing big might be about to be forced upon McConnell, McCarthy and others. Join in the effort to consign Trump to oblivion (with the best way being to get his ass imprisoned even if it means some minor folks get swept up in it all) and deal with a cycle or two of wrath from that “base” but keep the big dollar money machine that’s been their lifeblood all along, or lose that big money machine and not merely wither away and soon, but get their asses sandblasted off the political wall.

  3. I’m wondering if Cheney has a plan for a new party. Since she is typically about 7 steps ahead of the rest of her caucus, it wouldn’t surprise me. Either that, or she’s mobilizing to kick the crazies out. Not sure how she could manage that. Either way, it will be entertaining.

    • Six of one, half a dozen of the other. End result would be the same: Liz Cheney’s people finally having a home untouched by the crazies they empowered and ultimately lost control of.

  4. Cheney is just another oligarch, who stood with the evil dictator wanna be 90% of the time, who knows you can still find ways to rule without destroying the present version of our ‘democracy’. She believes in & has grown up rich & influential because of Reagan’s slimy con game has allowed the rich to rule. However, she’s not a believer in a Trump dictatorship & a new monarchy. Whatever allows her to be ok with her father’s crimes, & also tearing apart Latino families by the thousands, sucking up to bone sawing murderers, & so on, let’s take what we can get. If I’m standing on a ledge, I’d rather go with those that acknowledge gravity does, in fact, exist. Cults always end badly. Ask the 909 souls, that looked like a parking lot made of dead bodies in Jonestown. They’re not built for governing. Rather than deal with infinite complexity that is life, death appeals to them more. Being ‘certain’ is more appealing & comfortable than whatever truths we homo sapiens may discover. It will take much more effort to stop this personality cult, since their messiah has already been president.

    • Well you are pretty well right. Cheney been around for awhile. But after everything that has happened, I believe she didn’t want to go quietly. And now she’s not going to. She has set these clowns up. She knows Joe. She knows what he’s got is going to change the world. And instead of just going quietly into the night. She’s going to start the true downfall of the Republican Party. She knew what she was doing was going to piss off the fat orange turd ? in Florida. If McCarthy wasn’t such a crybaby little bitch it would have already happened. What she did was go down to Florida and roll that big fat gator ? onto his back and gut him. And these morons don’t get it. They sat there with the winning hand and let a little country girl from Wyoming bluff them with a ace high jumble of nothing. And that’s the real story. And when this all falls apart as you can bet it will she will come out with the name recognition of starting the whole thing. And it’s highly possible that she will be the first republican woman president.

    • Sheeee-it. They’re not just shooting themselves in the foot, they’re blowing their whole damned leg off. lol

  5. They are all lining up to kiss trumps ass. And with that you probably have the stupidest move so far in this century by a broken Republican Party. They are all betting on a dead horse. What trump had was an idea. And it would have been a powerful one. But just like every other idiotic idea to come out of a broken party since Reagen it just going to dry up and blow away. The DOJ is continuing their investigations. Everyone thought that they had changed the direction of the investigations to focus on the Biden syndrome. That might have happened but for one stupid little idea of a man that has no concept of political policy. Trump, having seen that his fortunes were going down the tube thought to have a insurrection to show how he was the right guy and Biden was the wrong guy. Now if the moron would have exercised a little patience he would have had his 2024 situation sewed up. But trump is a moron and he always will be. And he blew it by inciting a riot on the day of the certification. Because now it comes out that instead of Biden’s clan being investigated which eventually would have happened it went back to trump. And now we are seeing what the insiders knew all along. Conspiracies to commit conspiracies are all over this. Hunter comes out and says openly the laptop could have been his. He doesn’t know. The right could have pinned it on him. There was after all a lot of drugs and alcohol involved. But Rudy screwed it up by blowing his credibility all over the place by filing false charges from one side of America to the other. You have the cops who just can’t stop killing black people. You have trump strong arming donations from unsuspecting donors. You have the GOP following trump on donations. Yes they know not what they do. Now you have trump desperate to shape the the midterms in his favor. Now they go after Lis Cheney. There’s a saying that covers what has come of the republicans so called party. At least the old one like the three stooges were funny. But what you have now is a broken old man trying to claim some sort of victory when defeat is in the air. Back to what has become of the right wing shit show. You just can’t fix stupid!
