Also…what a weird song. I have many question. 1. Is she on a treadmill? 2. Is it me or are there odd racial undertones to the lyrics? 3. What the #&$+# does “the grocer told me what you do with bread” mean?? 4. Is rubber hose supposed the be a reference to drug equipment, or weird clothes? The 70’s…so weird.
It’s just a fun song. I never picked up any racial overtones though and that wouldn’t be in character with either Bette Midler or Carole Bayer Sager who wrote the song. No idea what he might have done with bread! I think it’s most likely that “bread” conveniently rhymed with “bed”. Rubber hose is a reference to tight shiny pants, made from some kind of plastic material – they were awful!
Thanks! I didn’t think it had racist undertones…just racial. It sounded like she was dumping a Black hippie layabout abusive loser. Maybe he doesn’t have to be Black, but there was the reference to a map of Mozambique, which I see was in civil war that year. So probably it was just a reference to the sort of aging hippie who smokes pot all the time and thinks they know everything about geopolitics. The bread reference could be a reference to a hippie fad from the mid 70’s I found. The hippies decided that white bread was toxic and they began making counterculture brown bread that they cooked in these cans that made round loaves they’d hollow out and fill with stuff and sell at their festivals or whatever. This started a whole chain of collective bakeries, which the establishment minded people thought was stupid because bread was supposed to be white and fluffy, so there were these asinine bakery wars where people tried to run hippie bakeries out of town.
