I’m happy and relieved to report that Loula is very much better. However, she will be returning to see her veterinarian this week for her annual inoculation (she’s not a fan) and possibly more tablets (also not a fan). But her Vet is lovely, so I’m confident we’ll all survive the experience.

Because the spotlight has very much been on veterinarians this week, the Furkids felt it would be an appropriate time for The Vet Song.  I’d never heard of a vet song, let alone The Vet Song, so it took some time to work out that they were referring to Fleetwood Mac’s I’m Never Going Back Again. I very nearly laughed out loud, but they were so very earnest that I really couldn’t. I managed to tone it down to a smile and asked about the lyrics. Long-time followers of this column will be unsurprised to learn that they had found it necessary to amend the lyrics.

Actually, there are very few words in the song; it’s mostly instrumental. I wondered whether this presented us with something of a problem. “No,” they assured me, they had a lot of pictures. “Just put some of the pictures to the music,” they said, “It will work out fine. We have paws and claws crossed for the most benevolent outcome.” Hmm, life is full of unexpected small challenges, and at least this one promises to be sweetly harmonious.

When you’re settled comfortably, the jukebox is ready to go. Just press play, listen to the intro and scroll down to the illustrations.

All proceeds from last week’s ko-fi.com/furkids covered Loula’s vet bill with enough left over for this Friday when she’ll be catching up on her overdue vaccination and, hopefully, swallowing her medication without too much fuss.
To all contributors last week: you have our heartfelt gratitude with loads of purrs and kitty kisses. You made a happy outcome possible. We love you. 💝 💖 💝

  1. Just love that last one. He or she must be a wonderful vet. I had one who just loved going to the vet and would drag me IN the door. The others not so much.

  2. The comfort-dog assistant photo came via the Weird Animal channel on YouTube. That particular collection features Australian veterinary clinics – the koala and baby possum photos come from the same collection. But, unfortunately, this clinic was not named.
My previous cat was very relaxed at the Vet clinic, but my current furchild is not a willing patient!

  3. I had a cocker spaniel that thought going to the vet was social time. He we the only dog I’ve had that didn’t mind going to the vet. Our current rescue pup, Desi, doesn’t like it at all.

  4. My boys hated the vets office and even saying the word within earshot would spook them for days. Even after my ex and I split up (I got custody of Corky – and she is the one who suggested it) I could say tell someone on the phone something about taking him (and later Sparky) to the vet. Even spelling out the word stopped working. The “V” I think was distinctive enough to alert them!

One thing I learned was to sometimes take rides just to ride for ten or fifteen minutes, or to run over to the drive though, if only to get a soft drink. Even order from a place in the next door shopping center that had really good takeout and was just a couple doors down from the vet’s office! I’d wait the time estimated for the order to be ready and head over and leave my pooch(s) in the car while I ran in. Corky, and later Sparky too wouldn’t know we were headed to the vet until I tugged on the leash towards the door of the place. And yes, I got the doggie version of the silent treatment after returning home. Even dinner and doggie treats didn’t improve their mood. Only a night’s sleep would!

Anyway, I always loved Gary Larson’s Far Side and he had some good cartoons when it came to pets. I thought one about a dog misunderstanding where his ‘hooman’ was taking him and bragging about it to the dog next door would be appropriate.
