This is a no holds barred commentary, what you’re about to see. Coming from anywhere in the world it’s quite the indictment. Coming out of the uber polite country of Canada, formerly our greatest ally in the world, it is shocking. This is not how Canadian politicians used to talk about the United States. The U.S. and Canada have enjoyed the most pacific and congenial of relationships. The border between the two countries is such that you can stroll over it. Canada/U.S. relations were a model of comradery forever — in the beforetime when Donald Trump was not in office. Now this is the new normal.

Trump does not care about his own people. This weekend some people will get their SNAP benefits because the money was in the process of getting loaded onto cards when the Supreme Court blocked the dispensation of the funds. Look for that to blow up on Monday morning.

Many a true word has been spoken in jest or from the poet’s pen. No lash back at Charlie Angus — yet — but there is this on Truth Social.
SNAP benefits are not handed out, sadly. When I was first on disability, around 2010, I qualified for a lousy $16 in benefits, if you can believe that. That is what it costs to buy cat food for one cat for a month, not anything that can feed a human being. But that was the level of assistance that I qualified for. The only time I got full assistance from SNAP was when COVID came along. I can only assume that the rationale was that since people could not go out and find work during COVID, might as well feed them until things change and they can go back to work again.
Again, it’s the old welfare Cadillac mentality, that the gubmint is just handing out cash and benefits galore to the lazy while the rest of the country has to work hard to get these things. Not happening.
And Trump’s stiffing one in eight Americans who depend upon SNAP assistance can and will backfire next November at the ballot box. We saw it happen on Tuesday, we will see it happen again.
Many people are working several jobs and still don’t have enough to make ends meet. They would love to have full time employment that sufficiently supported themselves, but it’s not happening. I still think Reagan’s “trickle down economics” are to blame. That seemed to crystalize corporate greed. During the great recession, companies learned to get by, making people do the work of 2 or 3 persons. Afterwards, I don’t think they ever went back to older staffing methods. Now, we have AI giving them the excuse to eliminate more jobs. All this, while the republicans are trying to eliminate any form of government assistance. I think people are reaching their breaking point. At least I certainly hope so.
Charlie Angus is right: Trump’s MAGAts will try to further demonize Canada, our peaceful, polite neighbor, as yet another distraction from their destruction being inflicted on the US. And not just FUX News and OANN will echo the bullshit: the lame, cowardly mainstream media will join in too. I despair.
