You know, this is just getting goddamned depressing. And that’s one of the reasons I haven’t been writing much lately. Ursula keeps extolling to me the wonders of my poison pen, but that pen requires ink composed of vitriol and fury. And what’s been happening over the last few months has been so pathetic, so insipid, so childish, and so f*cking banal that I just can’t work up a sufficient rant to tear it down.

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme. Will Rogers sure knew his onions. But just to get us off on a solid start, let me remind you of a campaign rat f*ck that caused widespread panic in 2024, but has already turned out to be nothing but another McTrump nothingburger.

It was called Project 2025. It was the end product of a long Heritage Foundation study of the best and brightest conservative minds, kind of like the advertising idiots responsible for Limu Emu Fansville ads, and was widely forecast as the step-by-step blueprint for the disassembly of the workings of the federal government. And if you read it, or any relevant parts of it, it was a well thought out plan that could have done incredible damage. But there was just one problem with it.

It was to be overseen by a political imbecile. The best laid, most perfectly thought out, step-by-step plan still requires calm, steady, professional leadership and staff to ensure a smooth transition to the desired end. And you can’t get that when the plan is being undertaken by a bunch of brainless sycophants looking only to please the dictator.

And that’s exactly what we’re looking at here. I mean, give me a break! Does anybody really think that RFK Jr. is capable of disassembling HHS when he can’t even wrangle his way through the child proof plastic on the top of a Tylenol bottle? That might work in some mom-and-pop bodega, but any federal agency has too many goddamned layers for a simpleton to bring it to its knees.

Here’s a quick example that might prove enlightening. In Soviet Russia, not only bureaucracies, but businesses were run by loyal party apparatchik. Orders were followed to the letter, because failure could lead to a permanent relocation to a gulag. The old Russian joke regarding Soviet factory efficiency highlighted the problem perfectly. If a factory was ordered to produce 1000 pairs of shoes, it would produce 1000 pairs of women’s size 8 flats, since they were the cheapest and easiest to produce. If the order was for 1000 pairs of shoes in a variety of sizes, you got 999 pairs of women’s size 8 flats, and 1 pair of women’s size 9 flats. And if the order was for 1000 tons of shoes, then you got a giant pair of concrete sneakers. And that’s exactly what’s happening in the Traitor Tot administration’s desperate attempt to at least try to enact at least a few of the provisions of Project 2025.

But it runs far deeper than that, and there is where our salvation lies. History teaches us that Autocracy flourishes when democracy is weak. And that’s true. Just look at the struggling democracies of Central America, central Africa, and even several European countries, such as Hungary. If the democratic foundation is weak, then it can be more easily undermined.

Let’s use Nazi Germany as an example. The Weimar government of the 1920-30’s was a direct result of the German surrender of 1918. The Germans had no history of democracy. First they were ruled by feudal Junkers, and later by a series of autocratic Kaisers. The Weimar government was doomed simply because the Germans had no handle on how to function in a democracy.

In comes Hitler. The three keys to success for an autocratic leadership is a weak, compliant populace, a weak central government, and a weak judiciary. And those were abundant in post WWI Germany.

The population hated and distrusted the Weimar government as a saddle of the victorious allies. First with speeches, then with first Rohm’s brownshirts, then Himmler’s black clad SS, the populace was cowed into submission. The Weimar government and the constitution were ripe for the picking. And an independent judiciary was nothing more than a novel concept.

Traitor Tot has none of that. For starters, the population is anything but cowed and complacent. Massive public protests into Traitor Tot’s excesses are frequent, and in the face of National Guard troops. The media is voracious in its coverage of his excesses, and Jimmy Kimmel is a shining example that even monolithic media corporations can be shamed by public pressure.

There are frequent reports of National Guard troops that have quietly declined to accept assignments for duty patrolling US cities as illegal orders, and have been quietly assigned to other duties to try to damp down media coverage.

And most of all, the judiciary is hanging tough. While the Supreme Court nay be six Traitor Tot finger puppets, the rest of the judiciary is dispensing justice as usual. Secure mainly because they realize that even the sock puppet Supreme Court would never issue a ruling that would undermine the authority of the federal judiciary. Those are life appointments, and El Pendejo Presidente can’t do a goddamn thing about it.

And then there’s the ultimate trump card. Alone among global governments of history, the United States is the only one based on the concept of democracy. The Founding Fathers planned it that way, and they were smart enough to plug in fail safes and stop plugs. And whatever Traitor Tot’s desperate flailings, democracy is stronger than the imperial machinations of one third rate pissant.

We will survive, but it won’t be cheap. Once sanity is restored, hopefully in 2028, if the Democrats can get their act together, it will be slow and painful. It will take at least a decade, if not a generation of sane constitutional government to repair the damage that Traitor Tot has done. Not so much to the foundation of democracy, that remains strong. But to the damage that will have been done to critical agencies and departments that control our national security, safety, and common good social programs. And by far the hardest thing to replace is going to be public trust that the government actually still works for the people.

I thank you for the privilege of your time.

  1. maybe, but I think that when capitalism morphs into more of a monopoly, people become unsatisfied and therefore the walls weaken for corruption to flourish under a mob boss wannabe and births a criminal enterprise.

  2. Both of you have set the scene well. Hopefully the story excesses of King T and the current crop of gilded billionaires who might usefully be compared to the 19th century robber barons) will bring about a massive and enduring (2 terms at least) Democratic Congress and Presidency. That level of strength and control will be needed to roll back even these few months of MAGAlomania. Beginning with an expanded and properly representative Supreme Court, winding back a very regressive tax system, impeaching, but without appearing retaliatory, a host of enablers and quislings. No small task

  3. I should also have added the need for further antitrust action to deal with big tech, media and agriculture, if not also in other fields. Just to make the incoming administration’s job all the more challenging and reformative. Big question: who will do it and where are they, the new FOR and their cohorts?

    • In answer to the Big Question: the folks are already out there. FDR was the Governor of New York State from 1929 to 1932, during which he promoted programs to combat the Great Depression, with assistance from Frances Perkins who became his secretary of labor when he became president.

The stock market crashed in October 1929. FDR became president in March 1933. That’s 3-1/2 years! The Republicans who caused the crash did nothing for all that time. Hoover refused to help the people. Things got worse. That’s why FDR won.

      These things take time.

Give it time, please. Keep protesting.

  4. Thank you, Joseph, for your column. I always look for your name in the byline. And I always enjoy reading what you have to say. I hope you will keep writing. This column offered a good dose of gope, something that I have been short on these last few months, as have most of us I fear.
    Thank you

  5. Trump is a failed, failing and continuing to fail but dangerous autocrat simply because he’s proved himself to be nothing but an inept dementing political space occupying lesion.

Tagging him as failure does not dilute nor remove the reality he poses from his desire to be a fawning autocratic leader, to others he strokes. He wears no regal clothes of legality, what so ever. He only wears a self-donned cloak stitched with the thread of illegality.

As Trump’s illegal decisions and actions gather in number he’s concurrently projecting he’s failed and will further fail with a level of ineptitude that is simply breathtaking as it is equally ludicrous.

It’s quite evident he’s trapped himself in a self made paradox of concurrently being a dementing autocrat and a lying con-artist failure.

Your words above provide confront and help the reader understand, and give gumption to move forward with the HOPE that there is a light at the end if this dark time-limited Trumpian tunnel.

The problem is, whilst stuck in this nightmare, Trump continues to flail about in his own piss and poison in a most buffoonish and incompetent way, whilst concurrently consolidating and concentrating his authoritarian power. These elements make a dangerous tinderbox and you effectively call that out. Trump is a political opportunist that is weak, failing, dementing and hollow. He’s as naked a wannabe emperor wearing no clothes of honesty and integrity – legal, moral, ethical, personal and political.
