I am getting more than slightly pissed at this point and with sound justification to do so. Recently we had the assassination of Minnesota House Member Melissa Hortman and her husband (and dog) along with the shooting of another Minnesota politician. We had an arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at his home. And even worse, the plaque honoring the January 6 Capitol cops who defended both chambers of Congress was not allowed to be hung. All of this is unconscionable on its face.
But the assassination of Charlie Kirk yesterday warranted flags at half mast and an Oval Office address. You would think that Kirk was our equivalent of Winston Churchill. And in point of fact, in Trump’s *mind* he may well be. Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom to Kirk and now we’re talking statues and memorials. Hortman’s family didn’t even get a sympathy card from Trump nor Pence and neither one of them went to the funeral. And the heroism of the Capitol police and other officers in force on January 6 has been reduced to nothing. What’s good for the gander is not good for the goose, and I find this more than a bit upsetting.
So a statue for Charlie Kirk gets priority — but a legally mandated plaque for the cops who defended the Capitol on J6 is still missing.

That’s at least the second time I’ve seen you write “assassinator.” You do know the word for a person who commits an assassination is simply “assassin,” right?

I’ll be the first to say it was wrong for Kirk to have been murdered, even though HE would have been fine with some left wing activist being killed the same way in a similar setting. He was a vile little piece of shit. But you DEBATE such assholes. You fight their words and destructiveness with your own words and good works. Learning he’d been shot in the neck by a rifle I knew he’d wind up dying from that single shot. At that range the bullet still had most of it’s velocity and even if it didn’t strike his spinal cord or his carotid the wound cavitation in an area like the neck is damned near impossible to treat.
Sucked to be him but as you wrote yesterday his comments about some people dying of gunfire was the price to pay for the second amendment? I wonder if that thought ran through is head before he lost consciousness? When the news broke he was dead it was like when my oldest sister who’d cause me (and many others) so much difficulty and grief died – I felt nothing. Not happy, sad or even relieved that I no longer had to worry about her finding me again (my other sister, my aunt and some folks from our hometown covered and told her they didn’t know – this was twenty five years ago). Nothing. Nor do I feel anything for his wife, any more than I would feel any sympathy for Stephen Miller or others. Except maybe wonder what happened in her life that she was so lacking in self-esteem to marry such a man.
