For reasons utterly passing understanding, the current president decided to take in the final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, probably the second most prestigious title (After Wimbledon, before the Australian and French Opens.) But just as the royals do with Wimbledon, coming and sitting in their box, Trump decided to invade yet another politics-free zone and ruin it by presenting himself as the single most viciously political presence to ever occupy that office. In so doing, Trump created a security-logistics nightmare in which he delayed the match, users on “Xitter” said that they blocked cell phone calls to and from the match, and he was booed anyway.

Now, one thing that we’ve learned through presidents attending events, unlike in the past when a president who wasn’t so brutally political would show up, this mostly 50-50 country would either applaud a president’s presence or just quietly watch on, is that the breakdown will either applaud or boo, roughly in equal numbers to the vote. Therefore, when one listens to video, it can be construed as boos or cheers by almost everyone. The boos are obvious above, but the Trumpy New York Post and Fox News heard cheers.

But the bigger story is just how much Trump’s presence screws up an event like this. While we might think it is safer to go to these wholly unannounced and just “be there,” Trump likes a spectacle, and thus he announced that he would attend, and thus security apparently included holding fans back, delaying the match significantly, and putting everyone outside to line up like cattle.

So that happened. The man loves a crowd and thus will take every opportunity to be seen as presiding over absolutely everything. He has utterly ruined something that practically ran itself as genius artistic development in the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and now he’s inserting his singular self in random other events to be booed and cheered.

I suspect that he was primarily booed today for two reasons. First, unlike perhaps an SEC football game in the South, this was a tennis match in New York City (Queens, old school daddy Trump area), and tennis fans have a bit of “elan” in them generally. So if one goes by the old and true maxim that the better educated and less hormonal, the more booes, so he was likely mostly out of his element today.

But note that he didn’t care about delaying a nationally televised, highly attended event. If I were president and wanted to take in something special like the U.S. Open, I would first ask if my presence could be done with security (He has been shot at) without being overly burdensome. Given the reality, I would think that most people would say, “No, I don’t want to make that big a presence and be a hassle.” But Trump is not “most people,” and apparently didn’t care whatsoever.

He is who he is, and one thing that we know, short of acute oncoming dementia, the power surge that he feels won’t be abating anytime soon, booes or not.

  1. Sinner and Alcaraz (perfect fitting names for Trump) aren’t even Americans. Trump and tennis please, there’s no fucking way even if it’s in Queens. It’s Rolex who invited Trump as a guest and Trump put a 39% tariffs on Rolex so this is making a deal with him time and has nothing to do with anything else.

  2. He hears the boos but couldn’t care less: it’s just another version of the attention he so craves. And anyway, they’re from Radical Lefty Transgender Trump Haters, a sub-species of MAGAland which he’ll be eliminating in the rosy dictatorial future he imagines when he thinks at all.

  3. This self-serving attention seeking behaviour – or is it a manipulative behavioural trait simply used to gin-up and appease the sycophantic base he craves, so as to maintain his currency? – will only get worse and increase in frequency as he concurrently ages, declines and unashamedly pimps his shallow, embarrassing, offensive and toxic malignant behaviours, in public.

  4. With the possible exception of Staten Island (an enclave filled with cops and firefighters) Trump is intensely disliked NYC’s Five Burroughs. He was held in contempt long before he got into politics. When he did, the election returns showed how much New Yorkers detest him. GOPers loved mocking Al Gore for losing (barely) his home state of Tennessee and with it the 2000 election but Trump has gotten himself a full-on ass whupping in THREE elections from his fellow New Yorkers. Even becoming President didn’t get him accepted into NYC’s elite society and THAT is why he shifted his official home to FL. A much friendlier to him and other GOPers state. During the hot summer months he decamps not to his beloved Trump Tower in Manhattan, but to his golf club in Bedminster, NJ where it’s a lot tougher for large crowds (thousands) to fill the street and chant in protest!

One assumes that out on Long Island the animus isn’t as great. I mention it because Trumpty has announced he’ll be attending the Ryder Cup competition that will be held at venerable BethPage Black. It’s a public course people of all stripes jump through hoops to get a tee time at. WAY out of Trump’s skill level I might add, even when it’s not set up to U.S. Open toughness. Providing security for him will be a nightmare and while as I said unlike over in NYC the fans might be more welcoming tempers will be short if they face the same shit as the fans at Arthur Ashe stadium did today.

Ten bucks (and that’s a LOT to a guy like me) says Trump will try to get his hands on the actual Ryder Cup and take it back to the Oval Office, daring the golf world to come and take it back! Unlike hockey’s Stanly Cup that also gets turned over to the team that wins it for the ensuing year which has a team of “Cup Watchers” (professional security people who are around wherever it is including parties at player’s homes) there are no such provisions for the Ryder Cup. Usually it resides mostly at the Home of either the USGA or the Royal and Ancient depending on whether Europe or the U.S. wins it. Golf was always a gentleman’s game where rules and customs were respected. While players even at the pro level still call penalties on themselves things have coarsened due to Trump. I just hope the organizers have the good sense not to let Trump get his tiny dick-skinners (what my DI’s would say instead of hands) on the thing. Trump will have rehearsed with his Secret Service detail on passing it over and one of them heading out with it! If I were them it would only be out of THEIR hands during the opening and closing ceremonies (which I don’t think Trump will be at) and they should only display a replica. And TELL Trump it’s a replica, because they ‘don’t want to risk some crazy fans from trying to take it.’ Then again, the way golf has capitulated to Trump maybe those in charge and the players themselves (most of whom are Trump supporters) DESERVE to have him steal the real thing!

As someone who loved the game for so long I find myself startled to be thinking that way but you know how it is – ETTD. Even a grand game that goes back so many centuries. About the only bastion left that has stood its ground is the Augusta National, home of The Masters. Trump would never dare play there either, nor would they allow him on the tee. And definitely not in the Champion’s locker room where he could steal one of the iconic Green Jackets. They’d probably lock up (with a guard inside) the room where members go to obtain their own Green Jackets while on the grounds. Only the reigning Master’s Champion is allowed to take his Green Jacket off the premises but as soon as they are no longer the reigning champion it goes in their locker in the Champion’s locker room. But you know Trump wants one. I’m surprised he hasn’t had a tailor make him one after becoming President, daring the Augusta National members to sue him.

THAT would be an interesting situation. They don’t like him and I’m sure that includes member Condi Rice. They once defied a President far more well liked (Eisenhower) than Trump and while Ike was still in office.
