I guess since every day is going to bring us some true dumbassery from Republicans why not start off the day with something so stupid it’s kind of funny? That’s how I view New Jersey Representative Jeff Van Drew’s comments about having talked with dead people who voted by mail in 2020.
There’s stupid. Then there’s STOOPID. And then there’s batshit insane but GOPers eager to please their Mango Messiah Trump will say anything to support Trump’s bullshit about debunked 2020 election claims that ‘millions’ of ‘illegal ballots’ were cast for Biden. Mail-In voting is the issue of import at the moment. So, as The Daily Beast informs us it’s time for asshats like Van Drew to grab a chance to plant their lips on Trumpty’s big buttocks. Van Drew has done just that. A day after Trump announced he was going to ban ‘mail-in ballots (Really Trumpty? How?) he went on Fox Business. With puckered lips puckered for Trump’s butt:
Van Drew said that the 2020 election, when mail-in voting was expanded, was a “debacle” and that “sometimes people would have multiple ballots sent to different addresses.”
“Other times, people who are passed away—these are real people I spoke to, large numbers of them, and it’s indicative of what happened around the country.”
The “large numbers of them” jumped out at me. I guess spending his time communing with the dead explains his avoidance to Town Halls or other events back home. He’s been BUSY. Doing something few people can do!
Folks didn’t know when they elected Van Drew as a Democrat he was actually a Republican. And he made it official by switching over to the GOP. I’d say it’s safe to assume they didn’t know Van Drew was clairvoyant either! You and I might think this nonsense about chatting with dead folks craziness is a bridge too far in his district. Not me. I’ll bet he doesn’t miss a beat politically back home. He has after all won re-election running as a Republican. And MAGA is a cult meaning if the cult leader (Trump) says the 2020 election was stolen then by grab it was!
However the cult is wavering just a bit lately. The Epstein scandal has planted seeds of doubt with a significant number of them. Also, even Republican voters had problems with the BBB before Trump browbeat Congressional Republicans to pass it. Finally, despite all the lies and b.s. Trump spews mail-in voting is reliable and NOT a source of massive, or even significant fraudulent voting.
Accusations of dead people voting are nothing new. At one time, back before computers and electronic record keeping govt. records were on paper. Siloed in different departments and often in different buildings. There were cracks in the system that could on a limited basis be exploited. Those days are long gone. As has been so often noted, election after election try as they might the GOP can’t identify more than a handful of cases of actual fraudulent voting. And of those, more than half are Republicans!
However as I’ve said the GOP is a cult now. Even those who aren’t MAGA just keep their heads down and go along to get along. If the cult leader says he was cheated then they accept it. Still, mail-in voting has expanded even in GOP states. It makes it easier to vote and even red state voters know it’s secure and can be trusted. Trumpty might find pushback from GOPers on banning mail-in voting. Like I said there aren’t just cracks in his armor these days, there are some actual holes.
Well, in the meantime you can amuse yourself with thoughts of the kid in The Sixth Sense whispering I talk to dead voters who tell me how to vote by mail after I’m dead. Also keep in mind the certain negative impacts of Trump’s decisions on voter’s lives will really hit home next year. If I were Van Drew’s Democratic opponent my campaign would be themed thusly: ‘Are you better off now than you were in 2024, and since most of you aren’t shouldn’t Van Drew have been out here talking to YOU instead of what he claims are LARGE numbers of dead people?’
