We have all heard that there is a code among inmates, that there is a stratification or classification amidst competing power structures, and, so the story goes, no one is lower on the list than sex offenders. Ghislaine Maxwell starts as a hated class of inmate, even before one throws other liabilities into the equation, rich, a sense of entitlement, and powerful friends. Now, though, the stories are making it out from Camp Bryan, her new home at “Club Fed” – a resor… a “prison” in which the inmates have puppy training class, yoga, and work privileges outside the facility. And the number one rule appears to be “hands off” with respect to Maxwell, and that’s not meant to be purely physical.

The latest reports come to us from Rawstory, in which we first see that Maxwell’s attorney takes umbrage at the fact that liberals are decrying the unwarranted promotion to relatively luxurious digs:

“I’m surprised to hear my progressive friends criticizing more humane prisons and Ghislaine’s transfer to a safer facility, especially after she faced serious danger in Tallahassee,” tweeted Maxwell’s attorney David O. Markus, who added that his client was moved because she needed “safer placement.” “The outrage machine wants to turn a safer placement into a scandal.”

Objection, assumes facts not in evidence. Nothing indicates that any liberal wants Maxwell “unsafe” from other prisoners or the public; indeed, the looser the rules around Maxwell, the harder it would be to keep her entirely safe from either fellow inmates or someone from the outside. This is purely cover, and it insults one’s intelligence to hear otherwise. He would be better off simply saying, “My job is to serve my client, that’s all I have to say.” And leave it at that.

Moving on, fellow inmates don’t seem to appreciate that rules were waived to get Maxwell into their exclusive club. That might be understandable; perhaps many of them actually worked long and hard to earn the privilege of the “minimum security” lodgings.

“She’s not making any friends – radioactive,” said Sam Mangel, a prison consultant who works with clients at the prison camp. “Nobody’s going to rock the boat there. They want to serve the remainder of their sentences with whatever modicum of comfort Bryan provides.”

Well, it is a good idea not to rock any boat while in prison – at least one assumes. But it sounds as though there is ample evidence already that anyone making too much noise will be punished for it.

A prisoner named Julie Howell said she was “disgusted” by Maxwell’s transfer to Bryan in a statement provided to The Daily Telegraph by the inmate’s husband. But after publication, prison officials pulled her out of a puppy-training class at the camp and transferred her to another federal detention center in Houston, according to her lawyer and the Bureau of Prisons. “Nobody’s going to say anything about Ghislaine Maxwell now, are you kidding?” said Howell’s lawyer Patrick McLain.

Wow, Maxwell must have friends in high places to pull off the ultimate weapon in prison, the ability to send “pests” away, even from pets. Except who befriends notorious child sex-traffickers? We can only guess.

Perhaps the most offensive element of the Maxwell move is just how “in your face” the whole thing is. It is facially corrupt, laughably corrupt, almost pathetically corrupt, and it doesn’t matter. One wonders if the Trump administration spent even a minute worrying about the optics of it all or, worse, didn’t care in the slightest, their rule is cemented in already.

Sadly, it is almost sadder if it is true that the White House no longer cares about appearances. Appearances are so “out” nowadays. Those things only mattered in a democratic republic. No more.

  1. Amerika is now a fascist country run by a moron. FACT. These stories will only multiply and get worse.
“paranoia strikes deep. Into your life it will creep. It starts when you’re always afraid. Step out of line…the man comes and takes you away.” Buffalo Springfield
The advantage I have is, I’ve already been unjustly sent to the penitentiary, and survived death threats from killers. I’ve been rehabilitated by the system TO KNOW OUR SYSTEM IS BULLSHIT. I don’t live in fear any more than a copperhead lays in wait for someone to phuck with it and get BIT. Wake me when the shooting starts. Of course, I understand all too well we’re a nation of cowards who couldn’t even honor the sacrifice of those who stopped this evil 1941-1945. WE DONT DESERVE DEMOCRACY…THE UKRAINIANS DO…THEY ARE WARRIORS…WE ARE JUST CONSUMERS AT THE MERCY OF THE CORPORATE BILLIONAIRES. FACT!

  2. I’ve had a half-formed thought in my head since reading this around noon. It’s clearer now and before calling it a night I thought I’d share it.

It’s speculation of course and might be considered pretty wild BUT I’ve often said the reason Maxwell is still on our side of the grass is because after what happened with Epstein she should have multiple copies of ‘receipts’ with different trusted people in case something happens to HER. As has been noted here on PZ and elsewhere at her former prison she was in a place with extra protections for pedophiles and certain other sex criminals. Most people have a desire to feel like they’re better than at least one person/type of person and even the worst violent criminals can say “at least I wasn’t a pedophile.” And that’s why pedophiles get a really high level of protection in prison.

She might have been safer where she was than where she is now. But here’s where my speculation gets wild: making a public fuss out of her being off limits even to criticism or unkind comments from fellow inmates makes it LOOK like she’s being protected. And therefor if ‘something’ DOES happen to her then her fail-safe won’t be triggered and the dirt she has on Trump won’t see the light of day.

HE isn’t smart enough to think that strategically and frankly neither are the lawyers he seems to trust. However others who have a vested interest in Trump staying in power are. Maxwll should I think be afraid. VERY afraid. She was safer where she was. And should have been more patient in securing a pardon or commutation. Yes a few more years in her old prison would have sucked but at least she’d get much better treatment than she deserves and could have walked out and into a waiting car and then to the airport and a flight out of the country with a fair number of years of life left to live
