Trump just issued one of the most terrifying tweets he’s ever written, making it harder and harder to argue that we don’t live in a fascist state in which stormtroopers go about their rounds – primarily in blue states, rounding up people on the basis of skin color and, perhaps, accents and last names, all in front of protesters getting weary of seeing hooded hoodlums going where they want, when they want, arresting people with precious little regard for records of their authority or the arrest itself. The actions are humiliating us on the international stage and bringing terror to American streets. It is all coming to a head as more and more people protest, including interventions by local police departments, churches, and fellow Americans, blocking ICE. To that end, yesterday, Trump blasted out a tweet with unverified facts:
“I am on my way back from Texas, and watched in disbelief as THUGS were violently throwing rocks and bricks at ICE Officers while they were moving down a roadway in their car and/or official vehicle. Tremendous damage was done to these brand new vehicles. I know for a fact that these Officers are having a hard time with allowing this to happen in that it shows such total disrespect for LAW AND ORDER.
“Therefore, I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, and Border Czar, Tom Homan, to instruct all ICE, Homeland Security, or any other Law Enforcement Officer who is on the receiving end of thrown rocks, bricks, or any other form of assault, to stop their car, and arrest these SLIMEBALLS, using whatever means is necessary to do so.
If someone is throwing bricks at anyone – police or otherwise, to the extent it endangers them, we don’t need ICE officers doing anything except calling local law enforcement. We can and do arrest people for hurting or trying to hurt others. Now, local law enforcement may not be a panacea, but they at least have faces, badge numbers, and names to be held accountable in a court, ready to testify in a court as to what happened. The ICE stormtroopers have none of this.
“I am giving Total Authorization for ICE to protect itself, just like they protect the Public. I never want to see a car carrying a Law Enforcement Officer attacked again! AUTHORIZATION IMMEDIATELY GRANTED FOR ARREST AND INCARCERATION. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” – Trump, posting last night to Truth Social.
Total authorization? What does that even mean? Must a brick be thrown first? Or do they now start to arrest protestors who they say may “look” like they will throw a rock? This is an easily identified and avoidable slippery slope in law enforcement. Again, if an agent or officer is hurt or if equipment is damaged, we already have laws to prevent such things. It appears that Trump is referencing a large enforcement action at a farm in Southern California on Thursday, an action in which an immigrant died, though not related to the rocks or flash bangs. The incident on Thursday came to a head as ICE agents detained even kids – the youngest was 14.
People should be deeply concerned about the anonymous “SS-like” people roaming our streets, rounding up people who may well be here legally. It sure doesn’t seem as though ICE is paying particular attention to getting things “right” when it comes to one’s legal status here. Thus the protests. Well, that and a lot of other things.
This country needs protesters. Indeed, we need far more. We need entire states to come forth to protect people. These raids will continue to hurt the economy such that it will be impossible to ignore the impact. But more importantly, these raids hurt the people who are rounded up, their families, their friends, and their co-workers. Increasingly, just the optics alone have been hurting the country.
