Please take this man seriously. Elon Musk is as responsible for Trump’s surprising popular vote win as anyone else. He has dumped perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars into politics, down right to the state level, and money does talk in this world. We have always worried that wealth inequality would have drastic consequences and here we are. After all, as Musk announces his new “America Party” – his answer to the two dominant parties in this country, there is no rule saying that Musk’s money alone will fund the movement, other billionaires seem to have acquired a taste for politics at the highest levels. Hate him, to be sure. Never buy a car from this man. But don’t take this lightly. Unlike every other third-party movement this country has ever seen, this one has the sheer muscle behind it to take off. Additionally, Musk has been a bit of a “seer” in his life; say what one will, he can position himself decades ahead of time. So this deserves real consideration as he goes forward.

According to a report in USA Today:

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X on July 5. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

The move follows his falling-out with former close ally President Donald Trump over spending levels in the president’s mega-bill and concerns about it increasing the federal debt. Musk strongly criticized the bill, attempted to rally opposition to it among Republicans in Congress, and called for a new political party in response.

This might well be okay in the short term. Be grateful for the fact that Trump and Musk’s egos are too big to fit into one room because the real danger was a fracture in the GOP in which Trump joined with Musk in the formation, culling most Trump voters out of their “Republican” trance. As it is, Musk leaves Trump as the “moderate” in this equation; thus, any votes going to Musk’s new party will almost exclusively come from the Right.

Yes, it will work in Democrats’ favor in the short term, so long as they remember one thing. They have to work for votes, and by work, I mean taking matters to the left and not trying to triangulate themselves. Do not try to win over Trump voters, no point because they aren’t coming and we don’t want their ideas even if they did come. Stick to the left and allow Musk to form the billionaires’ party and insist that it takes votes from the Republicans, and it’s all good in the near future.

In the far future, who knows? Traditionally, this country has just been on a spectrum, so to speak. Forty percent red, forty percent blue, and twenty percent that determine elections. Let Musk’s money take the far red side of the equation, let Trump thrash about trying to maintain relevance as we get closer to 2026 and 2028, and hold firm, awaiting President Buttigieg or Ocasio-Cortez. (Please don’t sleep on AOC, she has been undervalued her entire time, and just because the Democrats in Congress hold tight to seniority doesn’t mean voters must. She is Bernie in crossover appeal, only even more effective in that she speaks Millennial.)

So there it sits. Two things to repeat, this is a short-term gain for the Democrats, long-term is more mushy, and second – don’t doubt that Musk’s money will make this a far more important third party than this country has ever seen. The party won’t win the presidency any time soon – not without aggressively taxing billionaires and ensuring universal healthcare, childcare, head start, etc. – but it will be a key player in some Congressional races, some of which might well flip blue, especially in the Senate, if Musk goes ahead aggressively and runs people against a Democrat and Republican.

Meanwhile, enjoy a pizza and popcorn while they battle it out.

Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. It’s been an especially rough month, and my own health has not been great these past few weeks, which just adds to the frustration. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula

  1. Cue a Drumpf rage-tweet any time now calling the Muskrat a “socialist” and I wouldn’t be surprised if “elitist” appears as well.

  2. But, I certainly hope the Democrats will use Musk’s new “party” as Exhibit 1 in the call for billionaires to pay more taxes. If they have the “spare change” so they can start up a political party, they certainly have enough “spare change” to help fund crucial government programs most notably Social Security–currently the cap is $176,100 so ANY “income” above that amount is not subject to Social Security withholding.

‘Nuff said: ride to the rescue of the afflicted in full (proper) Robin Hood mode, showing where the Constitution was breached and demonstrating how and where it will be repaired and erosion-proofed (mor erepresentative SC for a start). All subject to holding the line until Nov ’26 at minimum. A lot of nasty stuff can go down in 16 months with nefarious hands at the tiller
