The White House’s plans to have a UFC series of fights on the grounds next year as part of the 250th Anniversary festivities is going to infuriate a lot of people while also attracting many big names, and in the UFC world there is no bigger name than Connor McGregor, longtime champion and an adjudicated rapist. True, he has never been found criminally liable in a US court but he was found liable for rape in an Irish civil court and ordered to pay nearly 300,000 Euros to the victim. Such a thing should render any recipient radioactive in any decent world. But in UFC world – of which Donald Trump is a fan – rapists and violent folks are a dime a dozen.

From a report in the fighting site “Bloody Elbow:”

Dana White is on board with Conor McGregor’s offer to return to the octagon on the White House lawn next year. Following the announcement from President Trump, a number of high-profile fighters have thrown their hat into the ring to get on the massive card. And no name has a higher profile than Conor McGregor, who immediately voiced his intentions to compete.

“Happy 4th of July, USA,” he wrote on X, before sharing a photo he took with the President this year. “Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House. I would be honoured! Count me in!”

McGregor then shared a screenshot of a private DM conversation with UFC boss Dana White. He appears to have sent two voice notes, to which the executive simply replied “I love it,” in all capital letters.

Having already covered the horror of scheduling UFC fights on the White House lawn – we have become the Roman Empire, where our gladiators will fight for their lives for our entertainment – the only thing left to criticize is the fact that someone like McGregor remains viable. But I suppose why not in a world in which they beat people senseless for fun? I mean this in the most literal sense, it is stunning that we’ve gone this long without a UFC fighter killed in the ring – why not the Fourth? And why not at the hands of someone already adjudicated to have raped a woman? That is where we stand.

According to a 2024 report in the BBC:

A woman who accused Conor McGregor of raping her has won her claim against him for damages in a civil case. A jury found that the Irish mixed martial arts fighter assaulted Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel in December 2018.

After eight days of evidence and three days listening to closing speeches and the judge’s comments, the jury of eight women and four men spent six hours and 10 minutes deliberating before returning with its verdict.

He should be shunned in all decent societies, unable to get an audience even for a fight. But the UFC is led by Dana White, a man filmed slapping his wife in public in 2023, and the country is led by a man also having had a civil jury find him liable for lying about a rape. This is one of the most disgusting industries in existence, and, as covered yesterday, it is raw spectacle, and thus this White House finds it just too irresistible. Nothing is sacred. At some point, on some day, Trump is going to go too far, and support will start to crater. I have been saying this for a long time, and it may have nothing to do with this UFC fight, but no one is immune to tanking public perception of what’s expected from a president.

How charming. Well, when the decision was made to have the octagon come to the White House, did you expect some taste and class? Of course, not. But there was a point in time when a person so credibly accused of rape would be unable to work in front of anyone. It really isn’t that different than hiring Harvey Weinstein to produce your next movie, not really. Except for the Roman-like spectacle.

I suppose we should just be thankful that Trump isn’t having ICE round up immigrants to battle lions on the lawn. The bottom continues to get lower and lower. It is not bottomless, though. At some point, he can go too far. We will see how this really plays out.

  3. I’m not opposed to UFC-style fighting in general; it’s just that it seems to draw a lot of despicable people to it. While there are decent sorts who fight in the sport, at least a few big name fighters have turned out to be real assholes. When Cheeto and his entourage show up for a match, they have to break out the digging equipment so they can sink to new lows.
