We could spend days talking about the outrages perpetrated by the Catholic Church, so it’s actually beyond refreshing that they’re finally doing something unequivocally right as Pope Leo goes after Donald Trump and his many supporters in the Catholic Church. Do not be deceived – when it comes to social justice, many American members of the church are far more moderate, even liberal, than many other religions. (We will leave LGBTQ+ and the issue of women alone for another day, speaking of outrages.) This is especially true of certain orders of priests; the liberal Jesuits come quickly to mind. The ever-loved Pope Francis was a Jesuit, and he is the one who promoted Pope Leo to Cardinal status to be voted in as his successor. Good for him. Now, Leo is doing what was expected when the Cardinals voted in the anti-Trump – don’t think for a second that they didn’t know what they were doing in voting up the pro-Christ pope.
They clearly wanted a global counterweight to Trump. It is not like Trump can safely give the Pope a new nickname and blow him up on Truth Social. Thus it is that Leo is dispatching priests to courthouses to provide immigrants protection, no different than the celebrated LA Dodgers did:

Yes, very good man – and how wonderful. Additionally, all immigrants should know that if there is a Catholic Church near an anticipated raid, the church can provide them sanctuary, nearly immune to all government interference. Video of ICE surrounding a church would go over about as well with the public as Trump bashing the Pope on Truth Social. But giving people protection as they come and go from the courthouse is just as big a thing. Does ICE want video of them going public showing them arresting priests – good ones? One thinks not, see above, the rules.
The election of Pope Leo was a clarion call to the world – even LGBTQ people, especially LGBTQ immigrants, that someone would have their back. The pope is already calling for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, peace between Iran and Israel, and now this thing. That’s a pretty fcking good start for what seems like a pretty good man.
