Filmmaker David Lynch passed on today at the age of 78. He left a lot of surreal work behind, including a strange message for Vladimir Putin, which he recorded in 2022, shortly after Putin invaded Ukaine. Evidently Lynch believed in reincarnation and his appeal to Putin was on that basis, of how what Putin was doing in this life would haunt him for many lifetimes to come. I don’t know about reincarnation, which is defined as coming back to this world in a future lifetime in a different body. There are other religious theories that one can come back as an animal or that an animal may rise to human level in another life. It’s all a bit much to process but here is what Lynch said to Putin.

The irony here is that many people think that Putin is dying of cancer and because he believes his days are numbered, he’s putting all his efforts into regaining the Russian empire of old, which means taking back Ukraine. What Lynch is saying is that Putin should be giving thought to the next life, not figuring that since this one doesn’t have that much longer to go that what he does here doesn’t matter. And definitely, if a person believes in any life hereafter, whether here in this world or in some other world, then one’s character and actions are important.

I have to say that of all the reasons I would argue that Putin leave Ukraine, it would never have occurred to me that the health of Putin’s own soul might be involved. This is an original take on this situation.

But then again I never did appreciate Lynch’s take on a lot of things. I may go back and screen Mulholland Drive and see if I can stick with it this time and watch it through. The first two times I tried, I couldn’t.

But just like you never step in the same stream twice, you never bring the same mindset to seeing a film twice. Tastes can change and mood has a lot to do with how we perceive things.

I’m curious to know whether Putin ever saw this clip and if he ever went on record one way or the other about what his opinion of it is.

  1. I told my son who is a big fan of David Lynch how I felt about Mulholland Drive which matches how you felt about the movie. He advised me to go on You Tube where they have a tutorial about the movie. He said he had watched the movie numerous times and liked it but didn’t understand it. But after seeing the tutorial he understood it and loved it. I do have to admit that I loved his Wild At Heart and saw it several times. RIP Mr Lynch.

I find it curious people are so in denial about death, and the mysteries of this life, when about the only certainty, once you’re here, is somewhere in space and time death is waiting. I’ve mentioned my near death experience in the summer of 1973, when my cultural insulation was stripped away, and I experienced supernatural evil, and that, as St Paul pointed out, there are powers and principalities. I also experienced the salvation that can come in a twinkling of an eye. There are no words that will convince anyone, but I can say David is right…we will reap what we’ve sown. If people had experience of what it really means, especially the risk of eternal darkness…this world wouldn’t be recognizable…people would learn how our choices matter, and would live out Jesus’s greatest commandments. To love yourself, your neighbor, and the mystery of ‘God’. Everything material that people worship…means nothing when the time comes. I like the end of Job. After arguing with his wife and false friends, who try to convince him he deserved his terrible fate, he has God reveal himself. Job says: I had heard of you, but now I see you, I despise myself and repent. He then covers himself with dust and ashes and remains silent. God doesn’t rebuke Job for questioning the injustice of his fate, because he remained honest and didn’t reject God. God rebukes his false friends and THEIR CERTAINTY that they knew what God was up to. Evil has gained the upper hand in our country for the moment. It does not have the last word. That I can guarantee to those that are afraid. It can and often does destroy a person’s body. It has no power over your soul unless you give in to it. A Jewish prophet once asked a great question: what does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose your soul? We have given the power of the mightiest country on earth to a man who has traded his in. Fear not. There must be a reason that phrase appears 365 times in the Holy Book. I think we know why.
