Sometimes the darkest of clouds have a silver lining. California has suffered the worst fire in its history, a fire which eclipses the Great Fire and quake of 1906 in San Francisco, a fire which makes the Chicago Fire of 1871 look modest and contained by comparison. The Golden State has been shaken to its core. Many memories have gone up in smoke. I find myself mourning two of my favorite restaurants, The Reel Inn and Moonshadows, both in Malibu, that are now smoking hulks. I was last at Moonshadows in September. As I sat right there with the window overhanging the ocean, I had no idea it would be for the last time at my beloved favorite restaurant. The loss of property, and cost to rebuild, the assault to the collective psyches of Californians and Americans is incalculable.
And of course the immature imbecile that a plurality of the votes went to in November, has used this opportunity to attack Gavin Newsom and other California Democrats whom he regards as his “enemies.” Again, we need to thank the weather gods for the timing of this catastrophe. Joe Biden was able to step into action. And he’s not alone. Our good neighbors to the North and South, Canada and Mexico, have come to California’s aid. The leadership of both countries is in the hands of adults, which is more than we can say for the leadership of this country, in the Year Of Our Lord 2025.

This is a template for the times we live in. Adults in different countries will make adult decisions. In the case of Mexico and Canada, they have long been our allies and they will remain our allies and staunch friends long after that embarrassment with the bad combover and the girdle is rotting in his grave.
Trump is a cancer on the body politic. That is no new information. Look for him to do plenty of damage and burn plenty of bridges. But also look to higher ideals and alliances of longevity to remain in place and work around the terrible man.
Trump is a disgrace. America has disgraced herself twice now. But the world knows by what a slim plurality Trump won both elections. They know that half of America is still possessed of a national character which is honorable.
Sometimes evil is in the ascendant. That is just the way of life. And Trump is evil incarnate. He is also stupidity incarnate. He’s a pathetic, attention whore and a fool. He is a vulgarian and a vice lord. The man is not fit to be a janitor in the White House, let alone its occupant.
The rest of the world is already burnt out on Trump’s excesses and his vulgarity. He will be tolerated while he is in office. And our satisfaction in all this: we have the satisfaction of Trump knowing how hated he is on some level. He may be reveling now in his power, he may be drunk on vainglory, as usual, but deep down he knows that he’s a sham and that the rest of the world knows that he’s a sham.
The circus is coming back to town, folks. But America is still America and enough of the world will pull with us and help us row our way back to sanity.
We are much beholden and grateful to our good friends and neighbors, Canada and Mexico. They could tell America to get phuqued and who could blame them? But instead they’re telling Donald Trump to get phuqued instead and helping America. Amen to that.
Look for a realignment in the next four years which is impossible to predict today. Desperate times call for desperate measures. We shall work around Trump and we shall overcome.

That this demented failure of a man was elected once was an aberration. That he was re-elected is the real evil and stems directly from the Republican party’s corruption. The not-so-GOP had its chance(s) to rid the nation of him, but their greed and lust for power dictated otherwise. From top to bottom, from Moscow Mitch down to the dregs like Ms Green, they all climbed aboard Trump’s gravy train with eyes open and morality closed down. Our next 4 years (at a minimum) of hardships are their legacy.
