Straight out of The Onion except all too real, President-elect Donald Trump named Peter Hegseth, previously the weekend host of Fox and Friends as his nominee for Secretary of Defense. Yes, the entirety of the most powerful fighting force history has ever amassed, all of the approximately three million people under the Pentagon’s command, will be led by a guy who couldn’t crack the starting weekday line-up. If it sounds like we are bagging on this inspired choice, the Republicans don’t seem all too enthused, either.

All of the below comes without any regard to the fact that Hegseth may be a great guy to the people around him. He may even be brilliant. But his single most vocal concern seems to center on anything that the military does that Hegseth determines to be “woke” – all the way down to re-litigating whether women should be allowed to fight alongside men. When interviewed by “The Shawn Ryan Show,” Hegseth said, according to Associated Press reporting:

“Everything about men and women serving together makes the situation more complicated, and complication in combat, that means casualties are worse.”

Given that it is almost impossible to conceive of the U.S. military doing anything but taking the best of the best in anything, the only possible complication would seem to apply to the people being attacked finding it more complicated fighting with well-trained and committed troops that just happen to also be women. How Hegseth seems to know better is best left to the consideration of the reader because there are a ton of Republicans who have much more than a mealy-mouthed and tepid answer, again per the AP:

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis called the choice “interesting.” Indiana Sen. Todd Young, who served in the Marine Corps, said, “I don’t know much about his background or his vision, so I look forward to learning more.” North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven said he’s not surprised that Trump chose Hegseth because Trump is “close to him and likes him and trusts him.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., gave Hegseth a bit warmer reception in noting that Hegseth “brings a lot to the table and will be “reform-minded in the areas that need reform.”

And this from The Hill:

“Wow,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) replied when asked about the freshly announced choice Tuesday evening. “I’m just surprised, because the names that I’ve heard for secretary of Defense have not included him.”

Annndd more:

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) was far more blunt. “Obviously, it‘s weird, and there‘s only one reason he‘s doing it: because he‘s on Fox News,”

That is “restrained” – to say the least. It is fine that Trump is close to someone and likes or trusts that person. Concerns seem to center more on, well – the guy is a television host who hates “woke” stuff. John Bolton – who, by all accounts, likes war – says that the appointment is more a loyalty choice than anything else.

Hegseth does have experience, some anyway, he is a former captain in the Army National Guard, served overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as at Guantanamo Bay. So, yes – Hegseth does have some military background, just recall that the last person Trump appointed as Secretary of Defense with a “Military background” was four star Marine General James Mattis along with Mark Esper who was a West Point graduate and former Secretary of the Air Foce… so, yes – military backgroundish…

It really does seem to come down to President-elect Trump trusting Hegseth as completely loyal, as opposed to the more fiercely independent-minded like Mattis, and Trump must trust Hegseth’s commitment to throwing out everything appearing to be “woke” in the American defense forces.

Maybe the national budget just can’t afford Brian Kilmeade, being a weekday regular and all. Maybe Hegseth is a good guy… to the “guys” around him. To be sure, he hasn’t passed through the Senate yet. It might get interesting.

  1. Oh hell…it doesn’t matter. The nazi commander in chief with the IQ of my dog will give the orders. Shit let’s drop some nukes on the next hurricane and see how that works. Everyone says the military won’t follow unlawful orders. HAHAHAHA. Said by those 99% talking heads who never spent a day in uniform. They will, once they’re purged of honorable people, will do whatever the commander in chief ORDERS. You know…like lock up an entire village of women and children in a building and BURN THEM ALIVE, which the Germans did. KEEP WHISTLING IN THE GRAVEYARD. The American experiment has produced the largest group of clueless motherphuckers ever to walk the face of the earth. Hey trump…nuke the blue states…it’s faster, more painless, and less fuss than what’s coming next.

    • The other possibilities like Matrix will.give Trump a fight over illegal.orders. This guy doesn’t realize that the military cannot afford to lose the 20% of military members who are female, and the military has said so. And even before women were approved for combat, units were grabbing women in non-commercial roles and dragging them for house to house searches so.they could speak to women who weren’t willing to talk to male soldiers just as dangerous or even more so.than direct combat. And natch since it wasn’t officially in combat, the women didn’t get combat pay.

  2. It’s like he’s taken away ‘The Onion’s ability to comment, but put them in charge of choosing his team. Those recaptured research monkeys are still available by the way. Could they be any worse than his picks so far?
