In news of the petty, it would seem as though the indefatigably insufferable Peter Doocy, Fox News’s White House correspondent and daily pain in the ass to current press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre, belt the need to further stick out as gleefully rubbing in the Harris loss Doocy is reportedly also vying for the job as Karin’s replacement. Today he asked a very awkward question about what might have been an awkward lunch, which quickly resulted in an X-treme grease fire on what used to be Twitter.

Doocy asked whether the weekly lunch that President Biden shares with V.P. Kamala Harris was “awkward.” It has to be – or at least should be, unusual to put the press secretary in a position to assume knowledge of someone’s personal feelings – why would the press secretary know or even care about whether lunch was awkward? So, as you rip Doocy for the question below, ask yourself whether KJP could have offered any answer at all or whether Doocy simply wanted to be the star and gloat. The answer is fairly obvious:

It forces you to ask how much money KJP would have handed over for the opportunity to set aside decorum and simply respond with “Why are you such an ass**le?” Actually, Peter might have relished getting that very question – it would help lift him in the eyes of Trump supporters. The exchange did rile everyone up on “X” as seen below. Trump supporters were most impressed, a few examples:

And, confirming that Doocy is in the running for the WH Press. Sec. job:

But now consider – because apparently Doocy did not – how Karin could possibly have answered the question. Was she supposed to say, “Well, I imagine so! After all, they both believe the other lost the election and thus hate each other… ” That is almost surely wrong and is just not going to happen. Indeed, about the only answer one could possibly get is “I really don’t know what you’re talking about,” or “How would I know how they felt?” – and Peter should probably think about that if he wants to be press secretary. There are others in the room who may be sympathetic or at least neutral and might remember Doocy putting others in such a position.

Meanwhile, there was a lot of sympathy for KJP having to man the post and maintain her professionalism:

And yet she does take questions every single day, knowing that Peter will do anything and everything to do just that – antagonize the situation and secretary. There is nothing wrong with asking tough questions, it is an entry-level requirement. But he didn’t ask a tough question – he made a statement – “How awkward” – meaning it must have been awkward. And, again, how could she possibly even know? Was she supposed to ask people, “Can you gauge the degree of awkwardness so that I have something to tell Doocy?”

We all know that the egos in that room match those of the people in the halls behind them. But a lot of people made their names in the same spot by asking tough questions that actually could be answered. The answers themselves were what might have been awkward and thus invaluable. Think Sam Donaldson, Chris Wallace, even Chuck Todd, come to mind.

It would almost be fitting for Doocy to have to assume the job in the Trump White House. Indeed, Doocy’s father – Steve, is often the most reluctant to get out over his skis in catering to the MAGA crowd. Perhaps Peter would gain a much deeper appreciation for tough non-questions that he couldn’t possibly answer. Perhaps he’s asking them now while he has a chance.

I am not sure whether Jean-Pierre is looking for work but the “shoe is on the other foot” might be worth watching because it’s easy to imagine KJP wanting a shot at the other side.

  1. Peter…may you find yourself glued naked to a chair in the basement of the Red Dragon, being asked: do you see? Right before he cuts out your tongue, and subjects you to a slide show of his victims and what you can expect next. I bet you wouldn’t act so smug then.
