Donald Trump may have finally taken his extreme rhetoric too far, so far as to be prosecuted as a death threat – maybe. Arizona’s Attorney General Kris Mayes, a first term Democrat, is now promising an investigation into Trump’s comments about Liz Cheney made on Thursday night in Glendale Arizona as a possible crime. The statement certainly sent shivers across the country and outrage quickly followed. This is the first word of an investigation into this specific threat, or any other, for that matter.

Trump said of Liz Cheney:

“She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.”

This is not the first time that Trump has made a furious threat against a woman that ended with a reference to her “face.” Remember that Trump once mailed a copy of a column to the New York Times’s Gail Collins with “Face of a Dog!” written beside her picture. He also famously said that Megyn Kelly had blood coming out of her eyes. He is the same guy who once mocked GOP candidate Carly Fiorina by saying “Look at that face!” Some things never change. But the guns trained on a face did rise to another level and Mayes is moving on it.

As reported by Fox New 12 in Arizona:

“I have already asked my criminal division chief to start looking at that statement, analyzing it for whether it qualifies as a death threat under Arizona’s laws,” Attorney General Mayes, a first-term Democrat, said during Friday’s taping of “Sunday Square Off.”

“I’m not prepared now to say whether it was or it wasn’t, but it is not helpful as we prepare for our election and as we try to make sure that we keep the peace at our polling places and in our state.”

No, it was not helpful to anyone with the possible exception of Kamala Harris. Trump is spending these last days prior to the election scaring moderate Americans and reminding them why they cannot trust him. It may well be enough to turn the election in and of itself. The race is close enough such that even small things – and this was no small thing – can quickly burst into something bigger.

So yet again Donald Trump faces possible criminal repercussions for his behavior putting others at risk. It is like he doesn’t feel alive unless he’s inflicting pain on someone. The sadistic impulse is never far from his mind, especially when he fears failure. Reports that his campaign is in turmoil and panicking over the latest numbers have trickled in on Friday. Trump’s tirade may be directly related to falling numbers and perhaps he is now compounding them.

The single last place that Trump wanted to bash an iconic conservative family like the Cheneys would be Arizona, home of the “old Republican party,” back to McCain, Goldwater, even Sandra Day 0’Conner. Such comments might well scare off just enough conservatives to blow the entire Arizona effort.

Mayes is looking into it. We will see what becomes of the investigation in the weeks ahead. We will see if the new threat has significant national ramifications by early next week. Liz Cheney will just have to see.

  4. I sent emails directly under my name to my Texas Senator. Donna Campbell telling her what I thought of her. Donna Campbell had police officers sent to my door to tell me I cannot contact my senator anymore. I never threatened her, I just insulted her. To be honest I stopped because greg abbott and his dps thugs are out there to suppress your voice. abbott/paxton is actively suppressing speech. he has thugs, you think we live in a democracy, abbott/paxton have already moved on to facsism.

    • Baldwin did same to me a few years back. only problem is, SHE didn’t do it. her COS did and when the cops AND the Capitol Police were done her office looked like a bunch of drunken thugs fighting with a lamp post.
