There is one thing about Donald Trump that most will actually acknowledge. It is true that he did not start a new war and for that we should all be grateful, I guess. If “Not starting a war” is the bar, it sure seems awfully low – Obama cleared it, too. But Trump argues that he didn’t just keep the United States out of wars, no – he now claims that he stopped a very specific war – one with France.
You might think that France is one of our closest allies, Macron and all. You would be right, of course. So, a big old “WTF” should be tossed around as we go to the replay booth. From Huff Post we have the quote:
Donald Trump boasted that his supporters had “no idea” what he did in the White House before launching into a nonsensical claim involving one of America’s NATO allies at a Georgia campaign rally on Wednesday. “I stopped wars with France,” said the GOP nominee as some supporters applauded him in the crowd.
Some supporters applauded him, others texted friends to ask who was responsible for them being there. Others simply shook their heads, they want taxes cut. Helpfully, Trump explained:
“France. You know the France story?”
No. But before you go on, are you referencing French assistance in the Revolutionary War? Is this about the “airports we watched… ” again? That would explain linking France with a war, though we needed them back then and, well – you weren’t president. Not that that matters.
Trump went on to make it sound like a trade war, just poorly… undefined:
“They were gonna charge us, think of this, 25% to all Amer — I have to protect American companies whether we like ’em or not, some of ’em I didn’t even like.” He continued, “They say McDonald’s was one of the most viewed things that they ever had. Can you believe, McDonald’s?”
Alright then. Now we get it. They were going to charge us tariffs? Vive la bastards! How dare anyone go around the world charging tariffs on everything? Well… there is this guy, Trump – from The Guardian just last week:
“The higher the tariff, the more likely it is that the company will come into the United States and build a factory in the United States so it doesn’t have to pay the tariff,”
When Apple makes iPhones for $15 each in a Chinese factory, that factory isn’t moving to Chattanooga at a cost of $115. Apple will pay the tariff, raising the price to $25 per phone and pass that charge on to you. Tariffs are great, indeed critical to US interests in one context, in goods that other governments might subsidize, things like lumber or steel. Other than that? Weird nugget.
Sooo, what to do about this thing hanging off the tariff thought:
“They say McDonald’s was one of the most viewed things that they ever had. Can you believe, McDonald’s?”
Yeah. Hmm. So one thing we can believe is that McDonald’s gets a ton of views. Tough to be sure in this context, though he has definitely viewed his own share of McDonald’s, yes – almost enough for tariffs, or something. Of course, he means when he worked a shift at the big Arch. Yes, a lot of views, not a lot of dollars earned.
This is kind of weird. If you cannot get through a barbershop media shot without Fox News editing small talk, you have no right to call a SWAT team on “60 Minutes” of CBS.

Oh, yes – there is his response to the quotes from John Kelly, his former Chief of Staff and four star general officer:
“Thank you for your support against a total degenerate named John Kelly, who made up a story out of pure Trump Derangement Syndrome Hatred! This guy had two qualities, which don’t work well together.
“He was tough and dumb. The problem is his toughness morphed into weakness, because he became JELLO with time!
Kelly may be a lot of things but dumb and weak are not two of them. You don’t get to his level of things by being dumb, nor can you stay there if you are weak. All of this is in response to Kelly reaffirming that Trump once said that he wanted generals who were like Hitler’s.
One can presume that Trump means total loyalty but there are two problems with that. One is that our generals swear loyalty to the Constitution, not a person, not even a president. The other problem is that one never ever references Hitler in any context other than World War II. To compare any contemporary to Hitler is an offense to the Jewish people who perished in the Holocaust. His name shall remain uniquely hated by history.
There are other examples of very loyal generals. How about FDR’s generals? The ones opposite of Hitler. People like Eisenhower, Marshall, even Montgomery from the U.K. was “loyal” to the Allies. But I guess American generals aren’t what he’s after – they swear allegiance to the Constitution, and that’s a problem, one guesses.
These are today’s nuggets. You can also get some nuggets at McDonald’s but the French fries have a $.25 tariff in order to pay for the war we never had.

Carol, People have explained what they are and what they do to the citizens of this country. They have done so numerous times in fact. He refuses to listen and continues to spout his ignorance about the matter any chance he gets. The problem isn’t so much that he’s an idiot, it’s that his cult base are even bigger idiots apparently. They BELIEVE him when he says this will bring in revenue to the U.S. treasury rather than what tariffs really do: get passed on to the U.S. consumer. There is nobody so stupid as those who will not learn. Let’s not forget, he thought Mexico would pay for the wall and likely still thinks this. And Mexico’s president put it in terms/words he ought to understand.
There are also the wealthy shits who do not care about tariffs because it has no adverse effect on them. Their tax cuts will more than make up for any extra money they spend on tariffed goods.
