This was ugly. None of us were alive in 1856 when South Carolina Democrat Preston Brooks used a walking cane to attack Massachusetts Republican Charles Sumner. The prelude to that was Sumner being critical of two senators on the issue of whether slavery should be legal in Kansas, to wit, Stephen Douglas of Illinois and Andrew Butler of South Carolina. Sumner characterized Douglas to his face as a “noise-some, squat, and nameless animal . . . not a proper model for an American senator.” Butler he accused of “taking a mistress,” by which he meant, “the harlot, Slavery.” That brought Preston Brooks into the chamber and Sumner was beaten into unconsciousness.
That was out of control and tonight’s scene in the House with Marjorie Taylor Greene insulting Jasmine Crockett’s eyelashes evoked that kind of primal rage. We’re still fighting the Civil War, that was proven tonight. Then Anna Paulina Luna got into it and Jamie Raskin begged for an adjournment.
They are trash.

We are at the brink of either pulling America out of this nosedive that Donald Trump and MAGA has put us in, or we could be on the brink of a second Civil War.
