There is so much going on. Stressful and even tragic news. There is after all so much wrong going on in our country and around the world. So much work to be done to get us to a better place. Yet, in ways small and large people ARE trying to make things better. They, and frankly all of us need some inspiration now and then.  It’s Christmas time and even someone like me who’s agnostic appreciates, even loves the hope the season can bring out in people. We sure as hell could use some.

I was planning on putting this up this weekend but decided not to wait. Being me, let me explain why. Over two decades ago I screwed up big time, blowing a relationship with an extraordinary lady. Distance was an issue. I lived and worked next to Dulles Airport west of DC and she lived over in Eastport, Maryland (across the water from Annapolis. So we could only see each other on weekends and due to my job not always.  Also, she couldn’t afford to fix her truck and being “house poor” I couldn’t help her. Given the increasing pressure at work I let that take over my life. And we drifted apart, but not on bad terms.

Like me she was a “doggie person” but enjoyed other critters as well.  We’ve stayed in touch via email and FB over the years and send each other missives on special occasions including of course Christmas. On her little patch of country land up in Virginia she has quite the collection of furkids, so I sent Michelle’s Sunday post, A Merry Catmus to her. I talked about how, if children in this world all got the care and love our critters have gotten this world would be a far, far better place.

Love. It’s there and we need to make an effort to spread more of it. I’ll have another post in a few days, but I’ll say here that like many I have my set of Christmas traditions. My routine. There’s music I listen to during the day and evening on Christmas Eve and a couple of videos I watch, but I wait until after ten pm to put in the movie Scrooged.

I remember seeing it in the theater decades ago and being “credit creeper” (watching at least some of the closing credits) the song enchanted me. I sat there for minutes after it was done. And that’s the last thing I hear before heading to bed. The Al Greene and Annie Lennox version of Jackie DeShannon’s Put A Little Love In Your Heart. I can’t imagine a better way to end Christmas Eve. There is so much that’s wrong in this world, but love can overcome it IF we spread it.

Love.

Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see it’s getting late
Oh, please don’t hesitate
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Another day goes by
Still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart
If you want the world to know
We won’t let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart
And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
All the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And see
Wait and see
Take a good look around
And if you’re looking down
Put a little love in your heart
I hope when you decide
Kindness will be your guide
Put a little love in your heart
And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And see
People now, put a little love in your heart
Each and every day
Put a little love in your heart
There’s no other way
Put a little love in your heart
It’s up to you
Put a little love in your heart
Come on and
Put a little love in your heart
You’ve got to
Put a little love in your heart
If we can do that, and get others to do the same we can make things better.

    • Ditto – thanks for this Denis. Almost forgot this song. Much needed, dare say more now than when it was a popular song in I think 1969. A lot going on then but probably more needed now than ever.
