Curiouser and curiouser. It appears that Donald Trump’s best defense attorney right now is Aileen Cannon. Here’s the lede from the Raw Story article on this matter, you tell me if it strikes you as odd. “U.S. District Court judge Aileen Cannon demanded an explanation from special counsel Jack Smith for his continuing investigation into Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents.” Umm….isn’t that precisely the job that Merrick Garland appointed him to do?

Nothing like starting out the week with an explosion.

There was a grand jury in Florida. There are grand juries all over the place investigating Donald Trump.

That is how it looks at first blush. So what Cannon is doing here, I have no idea — other than the obvious, which is fluffing Donald Trump.

Stay tuned. It’s bound to get a lot stranger. The day is young.

  1. That one poster had it right – she should never been assigned this case. The chief judge in SDFL has the authority to end this travesty. This case involves NATIONAL SECURITY and should not be adjudged by someone with so little judicial experience, forget her MAGA leanings.

    • I keep saying it – the FL case is a NATIONAL SECURITY case and it’s both a travesty AND a threat to National Security that the media hasn’t referred to it in exactly that way. Classified documents, the illegal taking of them, retention of them when asked to return them, and ultimately “certifying” all had been finally returned when that wasn’t true are part of the evidence. However, the issue is the damage to National Security. Not just Trump showing off some of those documents (lord knows how much sharing we DON’T know about) but insecure storage of them at his resorts. Keep in mind we know for a fact foreign agents have had regular access to them, especially Mar A Lago and could easily have both f**ked with securitiy footage back before the govt. was paying attention (not to mention I doubt recordings were permanently preserved in the first place), even posing as employees.

So yeah, that’s why I keep harping on the point. I just wish it could go viral on political blogs and social media and FORCE the media to stop calling it the “Documents case” and START calling it what it is: The National Security case.

  3. I’m not a lawyer but given history and common as mud practice of prosecutors continuing to gather evidence (which as we know can lead to superseding indictments) if Cannon shuts Smith’s investigation down she’s bucking a HUGE amount of case law and practice. That would seem appealable. If I were Smith I’d have my appeal prepared, send a copy to Cannon and tell her he’s ready to turn right around and file the appeal and send the motion to the defense. And politely but pointedly note highlighted passages in a second copy for her eyes only that cite longstanding practice and case law with references and ask “Remember what happened before with the appeals court? Are you SURE you want to go through that again?” as a way to get her to back down. Unlike say Trump or HIS lawyers, Cannon will know she can count on Smith’s discretion if she sees the light, and backs down.

    • If she were just an inexperienced jurist, I would agree. But she, in the past, has shown herself to be more amenable to the MAGA side than the legal side. She doesn’t deserve a heads up or any other warning, but a total slapdown from either her head judge or the 11th Circuit.
