Yesterday, October 24, 2023, may not be a day that will live in infamy, but it will damn well live in the history books as the day that the tide conclusively turned against one Donald John Trump. It’s all downhill from here, mark my words. On Tuesday, Michael Cohen began his damaging testimony about how deep the fraud went in the Trump Organization. His testimony isn’t completed yet and will resume later this afternoon. Within hours of Cohen’s testimony, Jenna Ellis flipped in the Georgia election racketeering case, making her the third Trump lawyer to do so in three business days. Then the piece de resistance, it was reported that Mark Meadows had agreed to testify to Jack Smith in exchange for immunity.

I enumerate all these things, because this is the mental baggage that Trump is hauling around as he contemplates yet more damaging testimony and yet more flipping of his former compatriots. The handwriting is on the wall, they’re going to save their own skins, not his. As you look at Trump, he’s listless and the list of feeble excuses he reels off don’t have the sound of conviction. It’s a laundry list he’s reading. He’s got nothing new to say. He’s a whipped dog with his tail between his legs, wishing he was a snarling, majestic wolf and hoping that’s how he’s coming across. He’s not.

Judge Arthur Engoron also admonished Trump about the fact that he is forbidden by the court to make disparaging comments about any people associated with the trial or about his staff. Trump just flouted that admonition, again, as you heard here. He spoke about the “biased” judge and the “person next to him,” which is presumed to be the judge’s clerk.

Trump has been amply warned that to task this judge yet a second time is not a good move. But apparently Trump is unteachable. Or, he’s got some kind of a death wish or believes he’s untouchable somehow. Nobody is quite clear as to how he thinks he can just break the rules over and over again — not just the legal rules of the business world and civilization generally, but the societal norms of being a polite person, if you can’t actually be a decent one. Trump can’t lift a finger to interact with anybody in any manner, unless it’s a transaction designed to benefit himself.

The trial will reconvene and Michael Cohen will doubtlessly have more interesting things to say, but I think he’s done the job he came to the court to do. And Trump’s demeanor reflects that that’s the case.

As stated, it’s all downhill from here. And 2024 is going to be the most incredible election year in the lives of anybody now living, I feel very confident in saying that.
