It has been a memorial day, one which evokes memories of the last presidential scandal of a magnitude which comes dimly near the one we’re facing now. For those of us alive in the Watergate Era, we remember it as an astonishing time, when the corruption of the sitting president was thought almost beyond belief. Looking back at Watergate in hindsight and comparing Richard Nixon to Donald Trump, it was a lark. Our nation, comparatively speaking, was nowhere near as messed up in the 70’s as it is today. Nowhere near. We were a completely different people back then.

The GOP had its bad eggs, yes, but it had its good ones and when the evidence mounted to a certain level, Barry Goldwater and other leaders of the day did what was right and told Nixon to pack his bags.

Nowadays, we don’t have the analogue of a Barry Goldwater or an Alexander Haig. We have Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz. Take a stroll down memory lane and look at the Huntley-Brinkley report, in black and white no less.

As usual, because we’re discussing Trump, the tragi/comedic elements have to arise. It wouldn’t be a day in Trump world without that. Today it was reported that Trump didn’t even know what a burner phone was and John Bolton called him a liar, in essence, and said oh yes he did. Remarkable.

And here is Trumpushka’s reaction, via furious emailed statement, per usual.

And here’s an ode to Shifty Schiff & the Scum, possibly a rock band that plays in Trump’s nightmares. (With Crazy Liz and Crying Adam singing backup.)

Trump/Nixon comparisons are as common as Trump/Hitler ones, but Nixon was a very different breed of cat. Say what you will about Nixon, he was a hard worker and he was smart. He wasn’t born with the proverbial silver spoon which then morphed into a gold toilet. He worked to get where he got. He had a few screws loose and a few puzzle pieces missing, but he was never the abject laughing stock idiot pretending to be a statesman that Trump is.

Seven hours is the new 18-minutes. Get used to it. We have a lonnng haul and a lot of work to do between now and November.

  1. Nixon was a Duke law graduate. Stupidity wasn’t his problem. Unbridled ambition & paranoia were his demons. This quote from Hunter S.Thompson sums up what a lot of us felt: “If there were any true justice in the world, Richard Nixon would be in the belly of a hammerhead shark, headed south of Easter Island”. God, Hunter. How I wish your crazy ass was still around. I would have enjoyed your take on the fascist takeover of America.

    • America has always had a kind of fascism. We are just now even talking about fascism, but the corporations have always had a toxic and disproportionate influence on our laws and culture. The culture war fools want a Taliban level of fascism. We will see what happens. Americans are for the most part stupid bigots, so one can’t have too much hope.

    • There was a book I remember reading in which one of the characters described the difference between wisdom and intelligence — Edith Bunker was as wise as hell while Richard Nixon was intelligent (but not wise). Funny.

I realize former guy is neither but just something I remembered.

  2. I like the line in the first Trump quote about all that “evidence” and how it’s “available upon request” and yet, for some odd reason, none of it was available when the COURTS “requested” it to determine if the “evidence” was actually enough to merit an actual case.

If Trump tried to write fiction, absolutely no one (not even the handful of his MAGAt fans who can actually read) would buy it because he simply can’t keep track of his own plot lines. Even the worst writers of fanfic manage to keep most of the important stuff straight but Trump just seems to come up with some new stuff that completely ignores the stuff he’d written two pages earlier.

  3. I think it is curious that Trump has a trigger response for anyone or thing against his own grain of intelligence … his brain MUST be the size of that proverbial grain of sand, it’s no wonder that he demonstrates total lack of any mental agility, just a continuous slug-like response of his favorite 20 words or less …

A died in the wool liar, like Trump suffers from his own idiocy, he CANNOT remember what his last lies were, so, he just has to keep lies flowing, since he probably lied before and another version of his lie can save him from trying to tell the truth in front of an intelligent audience … Which would be way ahead of his abilities …

Thinking back a few weeks it is glaringly obvious of his limited knowledge, “Injecting bleach”, was SO BAD, he should have been ejected from office that very day …

Upcoming article by Ursula titled, “Trump thinks Putin … “, those few words say so much about the shit for brains, Trump, who cannot and refuses to attempt, “Thinking before actions or statements”, and that, amplifies his idiocy …

Blanking out a call record for 7 hrs and more is the utmost stupid thing he has done, there is always a record out there, connection routing, time of conversation, (not content), but the NSA/FBI, with court approval can search enormous piles of data with supercomputers, and float Trump out into the real world, using already sworn info from others about connecting with trump during that interval … Trump’s goose is probably cooking to a solid crisp right now …
