Donald Trump is nowhere so far out of his depth as he is when it comes to normal human feelings. He made a complete ass of himself when he antagonized rather than comforted newly widowed Myeishia Johnson, wife of Green Beret Dave Johnson, months ago. He told Mrs. Johnson, “Your guy knew what he was getting into.” That conflagration went even higher when Johnson’s friend and Congresswoman, Frederica Wilson, confronted Trump’s gross insensitivity, and John Kelly jumped into the fray, calling her an “empty barrel.” The purpose of Kelly doubled down was to legitimize Trump’s lack of character by attacking somebody else’s. Kelly probably regrets putting himself in that position, now that Trump being insensitive to human suffering is a feature, not a bug, of this administration.
Likewise, Trump displayed the same cavalier attitudes towards the victims of Hurricane Maria. He couldn’t feel their pain, he’s never been even inconvenienced in his life, let alone made homeless by tragedy, or having to live without water or electricity, and so he tried to make light of it and throw paper towels.
But his current foray into trying to explain to a nation not only tragedy but willful evil, goes one step beyond. Now he’s talking about this horrific human rights violation as though it was a plot line in a television show.

Trump is clueless and has no idea what to say. When he feels that way, he hugs himself. He looks ridiculous and probably his aides have tried to discourage him from that particular body language but obviously he can’t hear them.
Trump is good for one thing and one thing alone, and that is holding rallies where he can insult people, lie, and gin up the base. That’s it. And you’re going to see a lot more of that between now and the midterms, when he does two rallies a day. May it backfire in his face.
