Condemnation is like snow, apparently, it melts after a short while. At least in the world of Mitch McConnell, who stated in no uncertain terms how Donald Trump bore responsibility for the insurrection at the Capitol January 6, but who now, today, told Fox News that he would support Trump if he ran for president yet a third time in 2024.

Now the key thing here is that McConnell said he would support Trump “as the party’s nominee” translating as if the rest of the party decided to nominate him, he would go along with it. That doesn’t mean McConnell is going to encourage the party to support Trump. On the other hand, a lot can happen between now and then and if McConnell sees Trump in a position to do him the kind of good that he did before, with respect to tax breaks and judicial appointments, look for Mitch to come running.

Still and all, if you run this clip beside the one of McConnell speaking after the impeachment acquittal vote — the second one — it’s hard to believe that he’s talking about the same guy.

  1. It was always a foregone conclusion. The Trompador will nominate himself on Sunday and be endorsed by acclamation (who needs steenkin’ votes?) and Mitch will retreat back inside his shell (if only to hold on to his ‘leadership’ position and to avoid having a Trump zombie primaried against him next time round).

In short, nothing new here, folks. Time to move along.

As we say over here “What can you expect from a pig but a grunt?”

    • About that “Trump zombie primaried against him” comment, that’s one thing McConnell doesn’t have to worry about: He was just re-elected last November and he’ll serve a 6-year term which puts his next campaign in 2026, when he’ll be 84 years old.
Except for 2002, McConnell’s faced primary challenges since he first ran for the Senate back in 1984 and he’s never drawn less than 60% of the primary vote (that came in 2014 against businessman and future 1-term governor, Matt Bevin).

  2. I think maybe the country’s District Attorneys have other ideas. They may not be able to heal the increasingly suicidal GOP from immolating themselves, but they sure as hell aren’t going to sit back and let him go on another sanctioned crime spree and destroy the country THEY love as much as anyone else. His come-uppence is rapidly upcoming. He has idiotically carried out his illegal dealings in a clumsy fashion, he’s going to pay.
He won’t be released to prey on the public again, if they can help it.

    • Agreed Lorraine … atop the slew of tax, insurance and bank fraud cases being built, are the pending suits for such transgressions as sexual misconduct, with rightly-aggrieved women lining up to punish a serial misogynist bully no longer shielded by high ofice. Trumpler’s going to be far too busy dodging incoming legal ordinance to ever become a realistic candidate again.

    • For a habitual criminal like Trump, the shocking thing has been how much he sucks at covering ANYTHING up. Any prosecutor who gets his case at this point is going to have a number of slam dunk convictions on their hands.
