It’s official, Kevin McCarthy will not run for Speaker again. He will share that fact in a closed-door GOP meeting but for right now Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News reports that McCarthy told him he will not run again. McCarthy’s dream was to be Speaker and he got his dream (nightmare is a better descriptor) for eight months. Evidently that’s enough.
But who does that leave? “Nominate Trump” is trending on Twit-X. Maybe that’s the direction the political winds will start blowing. And of course the arguments are surfacing. “Doesn’t the 14th Amendment disqualify him from running for the office?” If he’s disqualified to run for president then yes, he would be disqualified to run for everything. This issue is a bit hard to address because the GOP is acting like the 14th Amendment doesn’t exist, let alone the four trials and the E. Jean Carroll retrial. Trump is still campaigning and the GOP has its head in the sand, evidently wishing that some agency other than itself, either the judiciary, an act of God, anything would solve their Trump problem because clearly they can’t.

The net effect of Trump as House Speaker would be that the congress would get absolutely nothing done. That might help the Democrats a great deal in 2024.
Here’s McCarthy leaving, if you didn’t see that. For the moment Patrick McHenry of North Carolina is the interim speaker.

The young guns backfired and blew up. Paul Ryan resigned, Eric Cantor lost reelection rather spectacularly, and now McCarthy makes history as the first House Speaker ever voted out by his own party.

Another treasure found on memory lane.
Amazing thread – all those narratives of Dems in disarray can’t even begin to compare to the mess that is the current Republican Party – remember that Lindsey Graham called this years ago – If we nominate Trump we will be destroyed and we will deserve it… https://t.co/uvYt9wlj9w pic.twitter.com/WDKw9xDf5H

If only someone important in the party could have warned them.
A senator, perhaps, or a presidential hopeful.
That if they nominate Trump they’ll get destroyed… and deserve it.
Ah, well.

And of course right-wing media is all over it.
Alex Jones throws down the gavel:
"Donald Trump should be nominated as a litmus test to all these Republicans. With all the fake charges and all the fake trials, how awesome would it be to make Donald Trump Speaker of the House!" pic.twitter.com/pLZTOgZcUM

Who knows? Let’s just sit here and watch how crazy it gets.
If there is one thing we should have learned after the Trump years, it is to never say, “It can’t get any worse.”.
With these clowns, no matter how bad it seems to be, they can ALWAYS make it worse, just give them the chance.
There is an adage that has never proved truer,
“Elect clowns, expect a circus.”
