There are impulsive gestures, ill advised gestures and downright stupid ones and today Krysten Sinema has created a viral image of the third variety. It’s assumed that she’s imitating the famous gesture of fellow Arizona senator, the late John McCain, who did a thumbs down on a health care recall bill. That played out well then, but to do the same gesture with respect to the minimum wage, is playing out disastrously for Sinema today.
Additionally, the great law of Twitter, that There’s A Tweet For Everything, is in play and look at what was unearthed.
A full-time minimum-wage earner makes less than $16k a year. This one’s a no-brainer. Tell Congress to #RaiseTheWage! http://t.co/gmHYXGZzaT

Here’s Sinema’s piece of performance art, if you haven’t seen it already.

So far it’s sparked #MarieAntoinette and #LetThemEatCake.
I’m old enough & have been in AZ long enough to remember when Sinema was a punk rock kid, a social worker, an activist. I don’t understand how she thinks her actions today benefit her or the progressive constituents that elected her. We will elect her replacement instead. https://t.co/DV3okmu2gb

If she wanted to consider the minimum wage bill apart from the stimulus bill, which is what she is on record saying, that’s one thing. But to do this flamboyant, cutesy gesture on an issue which is crucial to many people, is not going to play well at all. This was stupid, and especially at a time in history when the GOP is desperate to win back both the House and Senate.
Ms. Sinema and Mr. Manchin need to be reminded that they too can be very easily primaried..
Unfortunately, there’s little likelihood that either would be primaried by people who would actually win their general elections.
Sinema won her Democratic primary in 2018 by crushing a candidate endorsed by some progressive and pro-Bernie folks (winning by nearly 4 to 1). (Martha McSally, who had the “incumbent advantage” barely won her race with 54%–going against Kelli Ward and Joe Arpaio for the seat.) And in the general election, Sinema couldn’t quite hit the 50% mark.
And the same thing happened with Manchin in 2018. He faced a primary challenge from a progressive-backed candidate and won by a 70-30 margin. In the general election, he barely squeaked out a win, just missing the 50% mark .
So, by all means. Let’s let both Sinema and Manchin (who don’t face re-election until 2024) be primaried by more progressive candidates. All it’ll do is ensure the Senate goes back to the GOP. WV’s been turning into a GOP stronghold for the past 20 years (another case of the working man voting against his best economic interest because the GOP lies so effectively).
That is sadly the math for now, Joseph. We’ve got what we’ve got. But we may yet get another bite at this apple. People forget that politics is a pot roast, not fast food.
Sinema would be easier to primary than Manchin. AZ isn’t as red as WV.
Also, she was for it before she voted against it, and really needs to explain WTF her reasoning was.
You are a sad excuse for a senator. Please support the people of the state of Arizona.
Know who REALLY screwed us here? Bernie. His introduction of this little amendment of the minimum wage has just made it LESS likely we’re going to get it, as seven other Dems besides Sinema voted against this amendment, which is telling. Now to avoid to flip-flopping charges, they may not be able to take that back later.
For those who doubt me on this, allow me to remind you that Bernie also helped kill Clinton era healthcare reform AND blocked nominees for the Postal Board of Directors which paved the way for the ones who gave us Louis DeJoy. Purity politics has gotten us nowhere for forty years. Bernie doing that NOW of all times is a stab in the back.
I thought she looked and acted like a ditzy cheerleader. What she did was an insult to John McCain. We’ve sure got some winners in the Senate.
