January 6: It Isn’t Over

We are nearing the end of the day, the anniversary of the insurrectionist riot Trump fomented to remain in power. His attempted coup on January 6, 2021 didn’t succeed. Not that day. But one of the ugly facts in a sea of ugly is that the insurrection never ended. Just as some descendants of the Confederacy refuse to accept loss in the Civil War and have continued fighting, Trump and his supporters haven’t stopped trying to overthrow our government and install him as dictator. Or King. Or for the Evangelicals the Messiah King, Lord of Heaven and Earth. (If Trump tells them he doesn’t like Saviors who got themselves crucified and neither should they RWNJ Christians will drop their Jeebus like a smelly turd and worship Trump even more than they already do) The point is, as Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin is quoted as saying in an article by the Guardian:

“January 6 never ended. Today is January 6.”

Trump as you know has never stopped promoting his Big Lie. Neither have others. It’s also well documented there are people hard at work to, if Trump makes it back into the WH make damned sure that unlike in his first term Trump manages to destroy our government’s Constitutional framework of checks and balances. HE will decide what will or will not happen. HE demand and get punishment on all who opposed him. And the American experiment will be over. So will freedom around the world without the United State’s leadership.

Trump is actually ramping up, amplifying his Big Lie and has added a steady diet of “Believe me and not your lying eyes” regarding the hours of violence we see take place live on January 6, 2021. He’s even said he’s “open” to pardoning everyone who’s been convicted. We all know damn well by “being open to it” he has every intention of doing exactly that. The pardons would be ready for him to sign as soon as he’s sworn in!  I wouldn’t be surprised if the point comes during the campaign he doesn’t hold up a big folder stuffed with paper (it would be a prop of course) saying it contains the pardons for the “heroes”/”patriots” of Jan. 6 on “Day One.” There are after all MAGAs out there who haven’t been so willing to go to war in the streets for him since he didn’t issue a rash of pardons before leaving office!  If he wants them to do what he’s likely to ask them to do to engage in election interference with threats and even violence most “Meal Team Six MAGA’s” are going to need a serious gesture from Trump he will “take care of them” next time around.

But the point is that while the initial attack failed the dream, the goal of the coup, the insurrection never died. Nor did work on getting another chance to install Trump as dictator for life. Hence the constant promotion of the Big Lie, and the morphing of it to include a corollary that what happened on Jan. 6, 2021 wasn’t really all that bad. Just some folks getting “a little over excited. No biggie. Oops. Sorry. Won’t happen again” (wink wink, nod nod) The scary part as noted by the Guardian is it’s been working, and too well:

There are alarming indications that for a sizable portion of the US electorate, his whitewashing of that fateful day appears to be working. A poll from the Washington Post and the University of Maryland this week found that a quarter of all Americans think the FBI was probably or definitely behind the US Capitol assault – a figure rising to more than a third of Republicans.

So no, the Jan.6, 2021 insurrection isn’t over. Not by a long shot.

The good news is that President Biden showed yesterday he’s able and willing to start throwing political punches of his own. It will be interesting to see how he deals with this during the State of the Union address. If he’s going to let Dark Brandon out for a romp on Trump and the GOP I wish for once the entire text of the speech wouldn’t be given to news outlets ahead of time. Let the piss and moan over not being able to “tease” it and take the force out of the punches.

In the end however, the tragic fact is that just like the Civil War and millions refusing to accept the Confederacy lost and that ALL people are created equal and deserve the full blessings of freedom, millions will never accept Trump also lost.  This fight will continue for at least a generation, including after Trump is dead and buried. Conservative bloodlust for dictatorship has set in and they will turn to someone other than Trump when he’s no longer around.  It’s an awful truth to have to accept but we’d all better accept it, and be prepared to spend the rest of our lives fighting off fascism.
