On Monday, Donald Trump implored the Supreme Court to pause proceedings so that he could appeal a D.C. Circuit court decision that denied him the chance to claim presidential immunity, and this has led special counsel Jack Smith to warn the High Court in a filing that additional delays are not a good idea, according to Raw Story. Trump and his attorneys are doing whatever they can to push any potential trial until after the election and the fact that the D.C. Circuit court ruled earlier this month that Trump does not have immunity from prosecution in this case has to grate like sandpaper under the former president’s skin.

But fortunately, Jack Smith is not easily cowed. In any photos we ever see, he looks as serious as a heart attack and I’m grateful for this tough-as-nail man.

“Delay in the resolution of these charges threatens to frustrate the public interest in a speedy and fair verdict — a compelling interest in every criminal case and one that has unique national importance here,” Smith responded in the filing.

The Supreme Court is now debating whether to review the D.C. Court’s decision. There’s still the chance that even if the SCOTUS decides to uphold the lower court’s ruling, it may increase the risk that the trial will be delayed until after the November election.

So it’s completely understandable that Smith is concerned.

The justices are also considering whether to stay the trial while they debate whether to hear the case. As Raw Story reports, some legal experts believe the appellate court’s ruling is quite airtight, and I hope this helps the SCOTUS speed things up a bit.

On Tuesday, Chief Justice John Roberts gave Smith some leeway, giving him until February 20 to respond to Trump’s emergency request, CNN reports. Trump is expected to file a reply to the special counsel and it’s likely the justices will decide how to proceed within the next few days.

“The public interest in a prompt trial is at its zenith, where, as here, a former president is charged with conspiring to subvert the electoral process so that he could remain in office,” smith told the SCOTUS.

This is definitely within the public interest and it is imperative that the Supreme Court gets the situation figured out soon. There is the very real possibility that Trump may be elected again and my fear is that if we thought we had problems during his first term, he’d be even more evil and incompetent during round two.

I don’t think I’m wrong in worrying about this.

  1. Given what’s happened in our 248 year history, anything is conceivable. Not many rational, well meaning people saw WW2 coming the way it did.

  2. I too, am thankful for Jack Smith’s determination. When he was elected the first time, I told my hubby that he would be impeached, as I knew in my bones he could not be trusted with classified material. I also said we wouldn’t recognize our country when he was through with it.
Sadly, that does seem to be the case, with our public division. If he is elected again, our country will be finished.

  3. Smith is a conscientious person and I’m glad he is on the side of our nation as opposed to running flack for trump. That said, has anyone considered what could happen if scotus decides in trump’s favor? I guess President Biden could become president for as long as he wishes or stays alive and then V.P. Harris can step in, and so on and so forth. I wonder if scotus has considered the possibility we could have a progressive, democrat presidency for life. And I’m sure it wouldn’t stop there–be very, very, careful alito, thomas, beer bong, vagina, gorsuch-you could be signing off on your pink slips. A president with complete and absolute immunity would, if that president had any brains whatsoever, get rid of scotus members who do not agree with that president’s policies. Just sayin’.

Yeah, I know, President Biden wouldn’t do it but it’d be great if he did. I would have very little problem with Ms. Harris being president for a long time-Joe is old you know.

  4. If Trump wins in November, he will use the DOJ to punish anyone and everyone who didn’t kiss his spreading Arsenal cheeks. He will.fire all career civil employed in the civil service, ignoring the law to do so. He will.use ICE to.check.the citizenship of anyone with a Spanish,Portugese , or African sounding last name and deport them. If he could legalize rape,he would. He will.go after any state he doesn’t carry.
it won’t be pretty. It will.be bloody, ugky, and destructive. How do.I know this? Because he has told us .
