Even a year ago, you were able to see, both in person as well on television, the way that your father’s death shocked and changed the world. People, not only in the United States, but around the world were roused to protest the way your father was treated, simply because there are bad cops everywhere. And now they’re all on notice.
As the state of Minnesota tries to make the man responsible for your fathers death pay for it, he’s continuing to change the world. Because the way that this trial is proceeding is going to change not only the way that future police abuse cases are tried, but much more importantly, the testimony of this week is changing the way that the world sees black people!
From the girl your own age who told what she saw that day, to the teenage girl who shot the video that shocked the world, from the off duty ENT who begged the police to let her help your father, to his own girlfriend. They all humanized your father. Thanks to those people taking the stand, and telling their stories, the world now sees your father for what he was, a big, kind man full of smiles and love. He isn’t just an image on a video anymore.
And they hopefully won’t ever go back that way again. The next time that a police officer kills an unarmed black man, the press is going to push hard to try to make sure that the trial is put on television again. So that the entire country can see what’s going on. Your father’s trial will hopefully help to open the way to make future trials more transparent, and to hold the police more to account.
Be proud of your father. He was a good man. And now, even after his tragic death, he is continuing to do good things for everybody. I wish you nothing but peace and love in your life.
