You know, it’s just too damn bad that Rush Limbaugh cornered the market on the word “dittoheads” for his listeners, because Trump has now officially put El Rushbo to shame. Every time that you think that Trump has gone too stupid time to be believed, the cranial black holes that are his supporters continue to amaze.
Trump has been whining about the media like a two year old from pretty much day one, but his new “slogan for dummies,” that the press is “The enemy of the people” is a new favorite chew toy for him. Well, guess what? According to a new Ipsos poll obtained by The Daily Beast, a majority of self proclaimed Republicans want to give The Tiny Thumbs Diktator dictatorial control over the media;
All told, 43 percent of self-identified Republicans said that they believed “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior.” Only 36 percent disagreed with that statement.
That’s right, this is not a drill. A majority of GOPasaurs who responded to the poll felt that His Lowness should be able to shut down news outlets that he feels are bruising his sensitive snowflake fee-fees. But Republicans are nothing if not chickenshits. When their feet were held to the fire on shuttering specific outlets, they ran like a clutter of kittens;
When asked if Trump should close down specific outlets, including CNN, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, nearly a quarter of Republicans (23 percent) agreed and 49 percent disagreed.
But that isn’t the scariest part of the story. Believe it or not, it isn’t. It’s kind of become expected that the average Trumpaholic has the independent thought process of a guppy. But what’s even scarier is the news that even non Trombies are starting to fall for the same lame shit;
According to the survey, 12 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of Independents agreed that “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior” (74 percent and 55 percent, respectively, disagreed). Additionally, 12 percent of Democrats and 26 percent of Independents agreed that “the news media is the enemy of the American people” (74 percent and 50 percent, respectively, disagreed)
In what parallel universe do 12 percent of Democrats, and 26 percent on independents think that it is somehow or other a good idea to allow Trumpenstein to appoint Bill Shine as the Ministry of the Ministry of Propaganda? But if Ipsos ran a fair game in this poll, that’s where we seem to be. People who should know enough to come in from the rain are falling for Trump’s self indulgent bullshit.
This is the part that really scares me about this poll. Forget about the Washington Post, the New York Times, and CNN for a moment. Those are the end game, the frosting on that “big, most beautiful piece of chocolate cake you’ve ever seen in your life.” Ever hear of a site called Daily Kos? How ’bout Mother Jones, or Salon, Politizoom, maybe the Huffington Post? What’s to stop Glorious Bleater from dipping his toes in the water first, starting with online forums that displease him, and if the blowback is light enough, then move in on the big boys?
Shit just got real. We all know that Trump has been using “The Big Lie” to poison the public perception of the integrity of the Mueller investigation. But with the increasing drumbeat portraying the free press as “The enemy of the people,” Trump is trying to pave the way for actual, physical regime control of the media. And if that poll is honest and correct, it’s working. If you’re not scared shitless, you should be.
