As a person who is a Roman Catholic by birth and by choice – sort of – I have had the pleasure of participating in church groups that don’t believe half of the Catholic Church’s teachings. We are also acutely aware of all the harm the church has done. The fact that I’m pro legal abortion, pro gay marriage (and sex), pro birth control, sex before marriage…

So I am used to  reading steaming piles of sh*t like this from Bill Donohue and plugging in the cognitive dissonance required:

Does Buttigieg really have a husband? Of course not. He may love Chasten but he can never be his husband. Why not? Because he has been disqualified by nature.

Do straight dogs get married? What about straight apes?  What about gay apes? Nature doesn’t marry anyone, you freak. If two 60-year-olds marry – as happens all the time, they can’t reproduce, either, so obviously, that’s against nature, too… right?

It is true that Buttigieg is legally married, but that is a legal fiction. The Britannica Encyclopedia defines a legal fiction as “a rule assuming as true something that is clearly false.”

As an attorney, I can say that you have no idea what you’re talking about Bill because even that definition makes no sense to me. You just think it’s clearly “false” to be gay.

The idea that a man can have a husband is clearly false—he can only have a wife—despite claims to the contrary.

No. Actually, Pete has a husband and doesn’t need your approval.

Buttigieg’s “marriage” is recognized by the positive law, or by what lawmakers and judges posit, but it is not recognized by the natural law.

Ohhhh, do tell us more.

The natural law, which was first promulgated by Aristotle and Cicero (and later amended by Aquinas), holds that morality is a function of human nature, and that we can arrive at moral strictures on the basis of observation and reason.

As a firm believer in natural law, Donohue just said something I can agree with Donohue. Moral structures should be based on observation and reason. I observed, as a 13-year-old, the kid in our class that was so obviously gay that it was never even questioned. Thus, if one is “naturally gay” (Because he didn’t choose to be gay, nor did I choose to be straight, observation and reason say it just “is.”) then the natural law says there is nothing morally wrong with marrying. As we’ve already established, marriage isn’t about procreation.

Skip ahead two paragraphs:

Think of it this way. It is an axiom of natural law that everything has a law that is built into its nature. For example, it is a law of electricity that if we want to generate it, we must insert the plug into the socket.

Sweet baby Jesus raised by Pete and Chasten, I can’t believe he went there. Wait, he went further?

Having two plugs or two sockets touch each other delivers no juice. Plugs and sockets are related, but they are different, and attempts to conjoin them always render sterile results.

Hey, Bill? I can envision a lot of marriages to you, gay or straight, that would render results more sterile than Pete’s marriage. Most of us mock people like Donohue, and it was actually Pope Francis who famously said, “Who am I to judge?” when asked about homosexuality. Let’s talk about looking away at the abuse of kids, the treatment of First Nations (Canada) and Native American kids. Talk about violations of the natural law…

  1. Trigger warning!!!!!! The last one got me. It wasn’t penetration. Dick in mouth at 3 years old and uncle perp was 18??? Sounds like my mother. She knew something happened yet moved to my uncle molester (UM) retirement community until my father died. Dad played cards / golf with UM weekly. In my 60’s: I asked if they were ever uncomfortable living by him for seven years – she said “we only thought it was touchy feely.” “You never gave us the details.” I started to give her the details – she couldn’t handle it. Yeah…..white wash it like it was no big deal. Fuck him. She’s dead now.

  2. Bill Donohue doesn’t speak for anyone but himself and the other dozen old fogeys in the “catholic League”, none of who approve of anything that happened after 1950.

  3. What’s ridiculous to me, is that being married, joining into a marriage is a very moral thing to do. Being LGBTQ is no less or more moral than heterosexuals.

  4. This idiot numb skull Catholic, shows just how mind-control works … It was just innocent touching and making the feel-good time great for everyone in the room …

The lasting guilt trip and embedded horror of a dominant person intruding on that sacred space, defined by a circle’s diameter longer than a person’s out reached finger tips, especially when the victim is young and unsure of the truth of abuse of the youngest kids ..

This is RAPE of that personal space, THAT is the point here, actual penetration is just as horrible to a young confused mind ,,, invasion of that space erases any thoughts of security or resolution of the victim’s fears and insecurity among other adults …

The Church’s answer to the problem? Transfer the offending priest to a different town and pretend nothing happened, this piss-ass thinks because of how he was raised, I have to think, is, “It’s ok because to play, “touchy-feely”, games, there is NO pro-creation contact involved … What a dick-head …

The super-powers invested in the highest ranks of the Catholic Church, aim for MORE Catholics of larger families, saying NO to birth control, (which would be obviously the answer to limiting abortions and reducing problems of VD’s) …

Women have been reduced to bowing to the Catholic Way, segregated to their own dormitories and garb to serve THEIR God, staying far away from their, “Natural Needs”, and the Priest is schooled in ways that don’t require, apparently, screening for, “Touchy-Feely is OK”, believers …

And as an aside, how much prime business land is owned by the Catholic Church in places like downtown New York City? Churches receive Tax advantages like a non-profit organization …
Also, what bizarre artworks are stored in the basement of the Vatican?

Questions, because of the secrets held in the home of the Pope himself …

Most churches, including Catholic And Protestant’s have neighborhood functions like dinners and weddings, funerals, fundraisers and youth support functions …
Absolutely, NONE of them have classes that say, “If there is NO penetration it’s OK” …

    • Love your comment.

If they had allowed women priests, there would have been 2-3 women bishops (at least if they started in 1990) and I guarantee not a single woman bishop would put up with child rape/abuse. The woman would have called the police, formed a commission to see who else was suspected and have them investigated.

      • I don’t know about that. From all the “jokes” we routinely hear (and heard) from comedians who grew up going to Catholic schools, it seems like the (female) nuns are all too willing to engage in physical abuse as well.

Also, let’s remember that only cardinals can elect a Pope and only a Pope can elevate priests to the level of bishop. Even if the Church had begun ordaining women as priests in 1990, given that John Paul II was still a fairly conservative Pope and Benedict XVI was more conservative than JPII, I seriously doubt we’d have even 1 woman selected as a bishop before Francis became Pope. And given the way many of Francis’s few pronouncements on LGBTQ+ rights have been negatively received in much of the Catholic world (especially outside Europe, Canada and the US–and, let’s face it, the US Church hasn’t been fully supportive of what Francis has proclaimed), if he did actually elevate any female priest to the level of bishop, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Church underwent another schism matching the 11th Century schism that split the Roman and Orthodox churches for good.

Let’s also remember the case of GOP women. They’re more than willing to let the GOP engage in all sorts of anti-woman policies (especially on the matter of abortion rights). I don’t remember any significant female GOP politician offering any more than the standard “thoughts and prayers” bull after mass shootings–even when the victims are school children. (Do I need to mention the GOP women who “proudly” display their gun-toting offspring as political props?)

I’m not ready to believe that female bishops in the Church would’ve been any less complacent than their male counterparts when it came to child abuse and rape.

  5. Another fucking arrogant asshole who thinks he has some divine force in his pocket. These fuckheads don’t even have the scientific facts to understand the scale of this universe, ever moving, is BEYOND our comprehension. Yet, they KNOW everything about WHO, if anyone, made it, and what the rules are. Liars. I didn’t go to Duke or Harvard divinity school because I didn’t want to become a professional liar.

    • Actually, a priest discovered the Big Bang: From Wiki Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître was a Belgian Catholic priest, theoretical physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and professor of physics at the Catholic University of Louvain.

Perhaps the only thing the Catholic church has done well is accepted astrophysics, physics generally, and evolution. You can’t go to a catholic school of any kind, elementary to Ph.D. and not have real science taught.

That doesn’t absolve them in any way for all the other stuff. It’s just a truism. I went to a Jesuit university (Gonzaga), and to be a Jesuit you had to have 2 Ph.D.s, one in theology and one is a subject to teach. One of the physics professors was a priest.

The University also has a LGBTQ Club/support, and the clinic dispenses birth control. The Jesuits, like Pope Francis, have always been radical (relatively speaking), which is why you’re hearing this from Donohue. Pope Francis talks about the duty to the poor and immigration. Not sex.

  6. The true ‘natural law’ shows that many species, from penguins to sheep to bonobos to albatrosses to gannets to otters and others involved in long term same sex relationships.

As you article states, what is unnatural is the abuse of power indulged in by pedophile priests, worsened by being covered up and excused by people like him.

  7. “Let’s talk about looking away at the abuse of kids, the treatment of First Nations (Canada) and Native American kids. Talk about violations of the natural law…:
YES! Let’s talk about these things more. They sexual predation of the church upsets me so much I almost can’t believe it every time I read about it. I do believe it, but it’s stunning in its massive reach and insidious sadistic nature, and these are our worlds kids! our babies, how can so many people look away?!?!
But as a First Nation member, I’m also so hurt by the continual discoveries of Maas graves at the horrific Residential Schools, where my peoples children were forced to attend, ripped from loving families to be “assimilated”, but actually tortured. to know that we were treated so terribly, slaughtered because we weren’t even “good enough” to be slaves (although i think we simply refused, and therefore were simply removed from the equation). my point is, we were decimated across the continent. What’s left is a few scattered remnants of what was once a peaceful, proud, amazing society. it hurts to think about, and hurts more to teach my children about.

  8. Maybe Donohue might want to reread his Bible. Jesus Christ NEVER mentioned marriage and Paul’s ONLY rationale for Christ’s followers to marry was so that men would have a sanctioned outlet for sex. (Apparently, the men among Jesus’s disciples and later converts just couldn’t keep their, um, thoughts all “pure and holy”–even though Christ was bound to return “any day now”–so Paul decided to let them keep on, um, spreading more than just “The Word” but they needed to find a “wife” to marry so and let the “wife” receive his, um, gift rather than “polluting” himself by paying a pro.) Donohue might also want to remember that marriage was little more than a *business* transaction in which a man basically sold off his daughter to another man (he might want to go back and read the story of Jacob and Leah and Rachel; Jacob had to work for his uncle for 7 years before he could marry Rachel, his heart’s desire, only to find he’d been tricked into marrying her older sister Leah and *IF* he still wanted Rachel, well, back to the salt mines, or whatever, for another 7 years).

Even in the US, marriage, until the latter part of the 20th century, didn’t have to be approved either by the Law or the Church. A little practice known as “common law marriage” allowed couples to basically “shack up” and after a period of several years (typically 5 to 10), the couple would be considered “married” for all intents and purposes (especially if they had children during the period). While this wasn’t common for gay men and lesbians, it wasn’t completely unheard of–even in smaller or rural areas (same-sex relationships might have been criminal but, for the most part, as long as the people kept a fairly low profile and didn’t cause any real disruption in the community, the people were, if not embraced, at least tolerated and even depended on as much as anyone else).

  9. The ONLY reason to be Catholic is that you have a rape fantasy, and it turns you on sexually to offer your children to Priests to get raped. This is THE BIGGEST REASON Catholics dont kick up a fuss about sex crimes—-the rapes and sadistic abuse is what they enjoy! They like it!! Sickening? Yes, i know it is sickening.
