One of the most important provinces of politics is to identify the talent on the bench and figure out who is going where and when — and then kneecap them. Ask Hillary Clinton, she will explain this to you. There are to all intents and purposes, two public Hillarys. One is the hyper competent public servant, and the other is the conspiracy theory icon. The two have the same face, same name, but all similarity ends there.

Hillary was identified as a threat many years ago and she attributed a lot of the obstacles that she faced in 2016 to the “vast right-wing conspiracy.” At any other time in history that may have sounded odd, but not then and certainly not now. If we got one takeaway from 2016 it was that perception trumps reality and lies are believed, even implausible, stupid ones. Tragic but true.

So the disinformation machine over at Fox News is seeking to do the same thing to today’s Democratic rising stars. Enter Pete Buttigieg and here’s Mother Tucker going off on him — and for something Buttigieg has explained at length.

Pure propaganda, no truth in it. Here is what Buttigieg said back in the 2020 primaries.

Buttigieg is becoming more and more of a regular feature over on Fox News. I don’t expect that to diminish. He’s presidential material.

If I could have picked the perfect ticket back in 2020, I would have been happy to see Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg on the ticket — although, make no mistake, I am not the last bit unhappy with Joe Biden. I also would have been delighted to see Pete Buttigieg on the ticket as Vice President, but I certainly understood the rationale behind choosing Kamala Harris.

Buttigieg is on the rise, just as the ugliness of LGBTQ hatred in this country shows no sign of diminishing.

If Buttigieg was straight, I don’t think there would be any question but that he would be headed for the top spot in not too many years. The big question that remains now is can we separate out the man’s ability and reward that, or do we need to demonize him for his minority status. And when I say “we” I mean the majority of Americans that it would take to elect him.

Buttigieg made a good observation that the citizens of South Bend didn’t kick him to the curb for being honest about who he is. He came out publicly and they reelected him by 80%.

The important thing to know about Buttigieg is that he presided over a “Rustbelt comeback story.” On his watch, unemployment went down, urban development went up. Things worked. That is what we need to keep our eyes on, not the ancient prejudices that the likes of Tucker Carlson seek to keep alive, even in the 21st century.

  1. “Hillary was identified as a threat many years ago and she attributed a lot of the obstacles that she faced in 2016 to the “vast right-wing conspiracy.”

In fairness, she brought up the concept of the “vast right-wing conspiracy” in reference to the attacks made on Bill back around 1998 and, according to the Wiki article on the topic, the phrase is even older.

“In 1991, the Detroit News wrote: Thatcher-era Britain produced its own crop of paranoid left-liberal films. … All posited a vast right-wing conspiracy propping up a reactionary government ruthlessly crushing all efforts at opposition under the guise of parliamentary democracy. [Emphasis added.]”

And in 1995, an AP story “used the phrase used the phrase, relating an official’s guess that the Oklahoma City bombing was the work of “maybe five malcontents” and not “some kind of vast right-wing conspiracy.”

For what it’s worth, most of the “mainstream” media largely considered Hillary’s 1998 use as being little more than a paranoid conspiracy theory as cover for Bill’s misdeeds (even though, the same media had been extremely complicit in promoting every single right-wing accusation against Clinton without so much as an iota of journalistic due diligence because promoting the accusations was “good for ratings”).

Hillary did revive the claims during her 2016 campaign but it had also been used during the early years of the Obama Administration.

  2. Every time Mayor Pete goes on Fox (which is a LOT…talk about fearless), I remember this bit from Psalm 23: “Thou preparest a table in the presence of mine enemies.” He is, for all effects and purposes, the spiritual descendant of Harvey Milk, someone who can and does engage with the other side. And the likes of Tucker Carlson will do nothing to stop his rise. The latter’s tactics make as much sense as the WWI habit of charging a machine gun nest with bayonets.

    • I don’t know how relevant it is, but you omitted the prepositional phrase for the Psalm 23 quote (KJV) that indicates for whom the table is being prepared:

Psalm 23:5 – Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies …

In your use, Mayor Pete would be the speaker, and thus the “me” and “mine.”
